Navy Spring Invitational - Final Results

ANNAPOLIS, Md.
-- Juniors Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) and Paul Mauer (Eagleville, Pa.) finished among the top 10 individuals to lead the Navy (Gold) men's golf team to a fifth-place finish at the 2018 Navy Spring Invitational. Carding the second-lowest round of the day in rainy conditions at the Naval Academy Golf Club, the Mids pushed up four spots in the final standings with a 54-over par 622 (312-310).

Starobin entered the final round in 10th place, but his 7-over par 78 on Sunday was good enough to close out the 36-hole tournament tied for sixth with a 10-over par 152. Mauer, meanwhile, shot the low score for Navy in the final round with a 4-over par 75, tying for 10th in the final standings at 11 over (78-75=153). Rookies Michael Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y.) and Jake Miles (Fredericksburg, Va.) both shaved a stroke off their opening-round scores with Brennan taking 24th (79-78=157) and Miles placing 40th (81-80=161). Senior Ethan Mead (Charlotte, N.C.) bounced back from a tough first round to shoot an 8-over par 79 to post a 50th-place finish (85-79=164).

George Washington shot the low round on Sunday (305, +21) to make the move from third to claim a 9-stroke victory over Towson and Lehigh with a 36-over par 604. GW is the 22nd different team to claim the team title in what was the 38th edition of the tournament. Additionally, GW's Jack Porcelli took individual medalist honors with a 5-over par 147 (71-76).

Towson (290-323) and Lehigh (302-311) tied for second with a 45-over par 613, while Saint Joseph's (303-318=621) and Navy closed out the top five.

The Mids will seek their seventh Patriot League Championship team title when the eight league teams converge upon the Saucon Valley Country Club the weekend of April 28-29 to compete in the two-day, 54-hole championship. Navy placed fourth at last year's tournament played at Bucknell. The Mids' last team title came in 2012 and was played at the Bucknell Golf Club.
