DANBURY, Conn. - The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday its weekly award winners for men's gymnastics and Navy's Tanner West (So., Cypress, Texas) was named as the ECAC Specialist of the Week in recognition of his efforts at the USAG Collegiate Championships this past weekend.
West led Navy's performance at the national competition as he won the parallel bars event and finished third on the vault in Saturday's individual finals. He was the only Midshipmen to earn two USAG Collegiate All-American honors during the two-day contest. His Saturday began on the vault where he posted a 14.15 score to rank third overall. On the next event, the parallel bars, West was the class of the eight-man field with a score of 13.65 that was 0.35 points clear of the runner-up, Jannik Haas of Springfield.
During the team finals on Friday night, West scored a 14.3 on the vault and a 13.25 on the parallel bars.
This is West's second ECAC weekly honor of the season and fifth of his young career. Two weeks ago on March 20, the Texas native was selected as the Specialist of the Week.
As a program, this is the ninth accolade won by a Navy gymnast in 2018: David Toussaint (Jan. 16 - Rookie, March 6 - Specialist, March 13 - Specialist, March 20 - Rookie); Andy Jones (Jan. 30 - Specialist); Ryan McVay (Jan. 30 & Feb. 6 - Rookie); West (March 20 & April 3 - Specialist).
West and his Navy teammates will close out the home portion of its 2018 schedule this coming Saturday when they host the ECAC Championships in Macdonough Hall on April 7. The five-team competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
