Men’s Soccer Drops 4-1 Home Contest to Loyola

Navy slips to 1-7-1 on the season and 0-2-0 in the Patriot League

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's soccer team dropped its second-straight Patriot League affair following a 4-1 loss to Loyola on Saturday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Jacob Williams (Fr., Millersville, Md.) tallied his second goal of the season for the Midshipmen (1-7-1, 0-2-0 Patriot League) but the Greyhounds (5-2-1, 1-0-1 PL) scored two goals in each half and they had four different goal scorers in the win.

"I liked the way the guys came back from the early 2-0 deficit," head coach Tim O'Donohue said. "They fought back against a very good team and Loyola wore us down in the final 20 minutes. We have a very winnable game Wednesday and we have to come back and beat American to get back in the [Patriot League] race."

Loyola took advantage of their scoring chances early as it took a quick 2-0 lead after 11 minutes of play. The Greyhounds also scored on their first two shots of the match. In the ninth minute, Sam Brown got Loyola on the board after he took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that deflected off of a Navy defender and looped over a leaping Ian Bramblett (So., Easley, S.C.) and into the back of the net.

Two minutes later Brian Saramago -- who tallied the assist on the first goal of the match -- scored the game-winning goal. Gabriel Carlsson played free kick from the left wing into the penalty area and after bouncing around in the six-yard box Saramago pounced on the loose ball and scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season to put Loyola ahead, 2-0.

The Midshipmen's offense started to click after going down two goals with three shots over the next 15 minutes. William brought Navy back within a goal during the 26th minute. After the Mids won a corner kick, Wyatt Millard (So., Columbia, S.C.) played the set piece to the near post, where Williams rose over the Loyola defense to head the ball into the goal.

Williams tried to tie the match late in the first half after a ball was played into the 18-yard box from the left wing, but the dangerous cross just missed Williams who dove toward goal to try and score his second goal of the night.

With Loyola holding a 2-1 lead at the half, both teams had six shots with the Greyhounds having a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.

The Loyola offense continued to press in the second half and it racked up 11 shots -- seven on goal -- in the final 45 minutes. Barry Sharifi regained the two-goal lead for the Greyhounds in the 59th minute after putting home a low cross from Saramago -- who finished the night with four points.

Prior to the goal from Loyola, the Midshipmen had one shot saved by Chase Vostick and two shots blocked by the Greyhound defense. The three shots from Navy in the first 10 minutes of the second half were the only shots the Mids recorded in the period.

Loyola controlled the momentum for most of the second half and added a goal in the 88th minute to secure the 4-1 win.

Bramblett finished the match with six saves, which was one save shy of his career-high of seven he set last time out against Holy Cross. Over the last three matches, Bramblett has made 17 saves.

Navy continues its Patriot League slate at home against American on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
