ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy (4-2) men's tennis team recorded a split of its doubleheader on Saturday, losing a 5-2 decision to East Carolina (3-0) in the morning and posting a 7-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's (0-2) in the afternoon.  Both matches were played at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

The Mids began the match by winning the doubles point from the Pirates.  Navy claimed the first match to finish, a 6-3 win by Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) at the No. 2 flight, but didn't secure the point until the third and last match remaining on the courts finished.  The point was awarded to Navy when its No. 1 tandem of Jake Fishkin (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) and Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) won its match by the same count of 6-3.
 
The Pirates won the first singles match to finish to tie the score at 1-1, then Thompson posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 flight to regain the lead for the Mids.  ECU would win the remaining four matches to come away with the victory.
 
"The team got off to a great start securing the doubles point against ECU," said Navy head coach Chris Garner, "but it was short lived as only Derrick was able to take the first set in singles play.  Andrew and Jake battled back in their second sets, but their opponents proved to be too strong."
 
Navy vs. Mount St. Mary's
Just as in the opening match of the day, Navy won the first and third doubles matches to be completed to garner the doubles point.  Jonathan Dollahite (Fr., Orem, Utah) and Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) recorded a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, then Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.) combined for a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 flight to give the point to the Mids.
 
Dollahite made the score 2-0 in favor of the Mids as he dropped just three games in winning his match at No. 1 singles, with Kjellberg following with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 2 singles to make the score 3-0.  O'Brien posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 4 flight to secure the overall match victory.
 
Also posting singles victories were Sam Vagner (Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.), 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 6 singles; Kahatapitiya, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles; and Andrew Hicks (Sr., Haddon Heights, N.J.), 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5 singles.
 
"Mount St. Mary's was motivated, energized and very competitive right out of the gate in doubles," said Garner.  "A couple of points were the difference as Romesh and Jan came up with a big break of serve to clinch the doubles point.  Jonathan and Conners played very well today in winning their doubles match together as a team and then again in their singles matches." 
 
Navy will be back on the Tose Family Tennis Courts for three matches next weekend, with the Mids also slated to play at NJIT next Sunday.
