PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Hubbard Hall's entire crew contingent was in action on Saturday at the Navy Day Regatta. Racing 27 boats in 10 different events at their season-opening regatta, the Navy heavyweight, lightweight and women's teams came away with seven victories as part of their 14 combined top-three results. Saturday's day-long event was hosted by Saint Joseph's University and competed over a 4,000-meter span of the Schuylkill River.
Â
Each one of the Mids' three programs earned victories on Saturday as the heavyweights won the men's open/collegiate four, the men's collegiate junior varsity eight and the men's open/collegiate eight, while the lightweights placed first in the men's collegiate frosh eight and men's collegiate frosh four races. The women's team augmented all of this winning with victories in the women's collegiate frosh eight and women's open/collegiate eight.
Â
The first win came in the men's open/collegiate four event. Entering two of the 29 boats in this race, Navy's heavyweight team saw its duo go one-two with times of 13:15.05 and 13:31.11, respectively. Saint Joseph's top crew placed third 4.15 seconds back at 13:36.26.
Â
The freshmen from Navy's lightweight program were the class of the field in the men's collegiate frosh eight race. The Mids earned the title with a time of 12:21.93 to surpass their brethren from the heavyweight ranks by 2.16 seconds as the heavyweights clocked in at 12:24.09. The pair of Navy crews were over three seconds ahead of third-place Penn.
Â
Navy's freshmen women got in on the victorious action next as they dominated their opposition with winning time of 14:15.44. The Mids were 22.76 seconds ahead of the second-place finishing Marist Red Foxes, who posted a 14:38.20 time.
Â
The Mids' heavyweights won the next two event titles on Saturday with top times in the men's collegiate junior varsity eight and men's open/collegiate eight. In the first event, Navy's top-three heavyweight boats finished consecutively with times of 12:04.79, 12:26.71 and 12:56.21, respectively. Drexel was 1.39 seconds back in fourth place.
Â
In the men's open/collegiate eight competition, Navy had two of the top-three results. Racing in a field of 31 boats, the Mids' top crew clocked in with a time of 11:51.95, that surpassed runner-up Marist by 7.40 seconds. Navy's B crew placed third at 12:09.64.
Â
"Today was quite successful and a good first chance for our guys to race," remarked heavyweight head coach
Rob Friedrich. "Everyone got a chance to row twice which will pay off in race experience later in the year."
Â
The women's team won the sixth gold medal of the day as victors of the women's open/collegiate eight event. One of 29 boats in the field, the Mids' A boat breezed to a 23.62-second victory over second-place Georgetown, 13:10.84 to 13:34.46.
Â
"It was good to finally get to race this fall," said
Joe Schlosberg, head coach of the women's team. "I'm proud of our showing across the board. We definitely have some things to work on and have room to grow, but this is a really good start to the year."
Â
The final team to end on top of the standings was the Navy lightweights who won the men's collegiate frosh four with a time of 13:38.41. The lightweights' second crew made it a clean sweep of the top-two spots with a 14:18.57 effort.
Â
The only three races without a Midshipmen victory saw the lightweights place second in the men's open/collegiate lightweight eight (12:03.84), as well as third in the open/collegiate lightweight four (13:35.96) race. In the women's junior varsity collegiate eight, Navy turned in the seventh-best time at 15:04.78.
Â
