Balanced Attack Pushes No. 21 Navy to 4-0 Win at American

Jacob Williams led the Midshipmen with two goals and an assist on Wednesday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 21st-ranked Navy men's soccer team (10-0-0, 3-0-0 Patriot League) had four different players tally a point in its 4-0 victory on the road over American (0-7-2, 0-2-1 Patriot League) on Wednesday at Reeves Field. The 10-0-0 start for Navy is its best start in program history since 1965 and its winning streak now sits at 14 matches.

Jacob Williams (So., Millersville, Md.) led the Midshipmen with a pair of goals and an assist to run his goal total to seven, which is one shy of his total from last season. Nicko West (Jr., Mansfield, Texas) chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Joe Alex (So., Lockport, N.Y.) tallied the game-winning goal. Ethan Singer (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) picked up the assists on Navy's first two goals of the match.

"I thought we were opportunistic today with our chances," head coach Tim O'Donohue said after the match. "The heat played a factor today. We like to press and the heat made it a little harder to play our style. After two tough games in the heat, we have to recover well and get ready for Bucknell on Sunday."

To start the match, American controlled the early possession and nearly took a first-half lead after Alameen Salako's shot from the top-left corner of the penalty area rung off the post. The Eagles continued to control the flow of the game but Navy turned the field in a hurry with a goal from Alex in the 27th minute. Singer was streaking down the left-wing and played a ball into the six-yard box, where Alex deflected the ball into the back of the net.

Following the first goal of the match, the Midshipmen started to play their game and Williams doubled the Navy lead in the 34th minute. Singer won a 50-50 ball on the right-wing and had a break toward goal but he played the ball back to the center of the 18-yard box where Williams gave the Midshipmen a 2-0 lead.

The 2-0 lead after the first 45 minutes moved Navy's first-half scoring margin to 15-0. The Midshipmen finished the half with three shots, all on target.

Right out of the gate in the second half, Williams completed his brace with a goal in the 46th minute. West played a ball into space where Williams picked up the ball and chipped it over the American goalkeeper to give Navy a 3-0 advantage.

American tried to get on the board in the 54th minute with a penalty kick but Ian Bramblett (Jr., Easley, S.C.) came up with the stop to keep the clean sheet alive for the Midshipmen. West extended the Navy advantage to four goals after an errant pass from the Eagles landed on the foot of Williams. Williams centered the ball to West for a one-touch goal in the 69th minute.

The Midshipmen sealed the 4-0 victory and their fourth-straight shutout to run their shutout streak to 400:21. Navy finished with a slight 6-5 edge in shots with the Mids recording five shots on goal, compared to just one from the Eagle, which came on the penalty kick in the second half.

With the 14-straight victories, which is the longest winning streak in the nation, Navy is one victory shy of their 15-match winning streak during the 2013 season.

Navy is back in action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Bucknell at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
