Boston Scores in 106th Minute as Navy Drops Second-Straight Match

Navy has now gone winless in its last three matches

BOSTON, Mass. – The Navy men's soccer team (11-2-1, 4-2-1 Patriot League) dropped its second-straight league contest and has gone winless in three-straight matches following Boston University's (4-10-1, 3-4-0 Patriot League) game-winning goal in the 106th minute as the Midshipmen dropped a 1-0 road contest to Terriers on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Navy now slips to third in the Patriot League standings and is tied with Lafayette at 13 points. Lehigh stays in first with 17 points and Loyola jumps to second with 15 points. The Midshipmen have now been held scoreless for 182:29.

"The guys battled today," head coach Tim O'Donohue said after the match. "We never got into a rhythm and it was a very tough way to lose on a shot from distance. We need to get through this patch and get ready for Colgate."

Boston was knocking on the door early with a shot that was blocked and another that hit the post in the sixth and seventh minutes. The Terriers had five of the first six shots of the game with four coming in the first 19 minutes of the contest with Ian Bramblett (Jr., Easley, S.C.) notching his first save of the night in the 19th minute. Bramblett came up with his second save of the contest in the 29th minute as Navy was still looking for its first shot on goal.

In the 39th minute, Ethan Singer (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) made a long pass through the Boston defense that found Jacob Williams (So., Millersville, Md.) racing toward the 18-yard box. Just before getting into the penalty area, Williams chipped the ball past the charging Terrier goalkeeper and raced toward the end line. Williams shot the ball toward a vacant goal but two Boston defenders raced back and cleared the ball away before reaching the goal line as the game remained scoreless heading into the half.

Throughout the first 45 minutes, the Terriers held a 5-3 advantage in shots and they also had two shots on goal, compared to Navy's one, which came from Williams in the last six minutes of the half.

In the second half, both teams generated scoring chances as the Midshipmen held a 5-4 edge in shots but both netminders came up with a pair of saves as the game remained scoreless after 90 minutes of action.

Joe Alex (So., Lockport, N.Y.) registered the only shot in the first overtime period and in the second overtime stanza Toni Adewole (Jr., Clarksburg, Md.) tallied the Midshipmen's only shot. The only shot the Terriers recorded over the two overtime periods was in the game-winning goal in the 106th minute. From 35 yards out, Satchel Cortet tallied his second goal of the season after his shot looped over the leaping Bramblett in goal to steal the 1-0 victory for Boston. Despite allowing the goal, Bramblett finished with four saves in the match.

Navy has now dropped all four of its contests on the road against Boston, compared to a 2-1-0 mark in Annapolis against the Terriers.

The Midshipmen are back on the road next weekend as they travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to take on Colgate at 4 p.m. next Saturday. Colgate currently sits in seventh in the Patriot League standings with seven points. A win or a tie from Navy clinches its spot in the Patriot League Tournament.
