The Navy men's golf team concluded its fall season by placing 11th at the two-day, 54-hole Steelwood Collegiate Invitational played at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala. over the weekend. The Mids shot progressively better rounds en route to covering the course with a 30-over par 894 (303-299-292), two strokes behind 10th-place Richmond (892) and five behind Wofford (889).
Sorting Out The Finish
The 13-team field featured four teams ranked among the top 100 and seven in the top 150 in what was the strongest field the Mids have faced this fall. Among those teams was Mississippi State who shot under par all three days en route to its tournament-winning 19-under par 845 (286-278-281). The 99th-ranked Bulldogs won by 15 strokes over second-place Arkansas State (288-290-281=859), who came into the weekend ranked 38th. Rounding out the top five were Indiana (863, -1) in third, followed by Kennesaw State (868, +4) and Cincinnati (871, +7)
Mississippi State's Ford Clegg leap-frogged teammate Garrett Johnson on the final day to take individual medalist honors with his 10-under par 206 (71-68-67). Johnson finished a stroke behind in second with a 9-under par 207 (71-66-70).
Navy Notes
Chad Deegan (So / Costa Mesa, Calif.) led the way for the Mids, finishing just a stroke outside of the top 20 with his 4-over par 220 (73-73-74). Meanwhile, juniors
Charlie Musto (Sterling, Va.) and
Ward Wilkinson (Ashland, Va.) closed out the tournament in 42nd. After shooting an 8-over par 80 in the opening round, Musto rebounded nicely with a 1-under par 71 in the nightcap. He was 1-over on the final day to finish with a 224. Wilkinson shot up the standings with his 1-under par 71 in the final round to cover the course with a 224.
Team captain
Thomas Garbee (Sr / Asheville, N.C.) played his best round in Sunday's final 18, shooting a 2-over par 74 to finish 14-over (230) and in 63rd.
Rounding out the group was
Michael Brennan (Jr / Locust Valley, N.Y.), who took 67th with a 16-over par 232 (76-80-76).
