Navy’s Heavyweight and Lightweight Crews Race at Princeton Chase

Lightweights have multiple boats finish top-10 in a pair of races

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Navy heavyweight and lightweight crew programs had 14 boats racing in Sunday's Princeton Chase. Competing in a head-style contest on a 2.75-mile stretch of Lake Carnegie, the Mids had six heavyweight crews see action, while its lightweight fleet had four crews race twice. Navy's lightweights highlighted Sunday's results as in both the Men's Lightweight Eights – Round 1 and Men's Lightweight Eights – Round 2, the Mids had a pair of crews finish in the top-seven. One heavyweight boat cracked the top-10 in a deep field in the Men's Heavyweight Eights event.

Competing twice on Sunday, the Navy lightweights first raced at 10 a.m. with four entries amongst a field of 30 boats before turning around at 11:45 a.m. and racing those four crews again. In the latter race, the field was 20 boats deep. The best result for any Navy boat on Sunday was the Navy 'A' crew in the Men's Lightweight Eights – Round 1 race as the Mids placed fifth overall. Standing in seventh place at the midway point, Navy overtook a pair of crews to complete the race with a time of 13:31.261. The Mids' second boat was a little over a second back in seventh place at 13:32.640. Navy's two lower boats ranked 13th and 26th overall with times of 13:51.873 and 14:32.392, respectively.

Following a short reprieve, Navy turned in solid results once again as the Mids' B, A, C crews finished consecutively in sixth, seventh and eighth place within 1.165 seconds of each other. The Navy 'B' boat clocked in at 14:14.853 slightly ahead of the 'A' boat at 14:15.189. The third boat in that tight pack, Navy 'C' conquered the course with a time of 14:16.018. Navy's 'D' placed 17th at 15:12.372.

The Mids' heavyweight corps led off the action on Sunday in the Men's Heavyweight Eights event at 9:00 a.m. Navy entered six boats in the field of 50 crews from 17 different schools. In a series of four crews the finished in positions five through eight, Navy 'A' mixed it up with Cal, Princeton and Dartmouth. While Cal placed fifth at 13:14.106, Navy clocked in at 13:19.929 to finish in eighth. Princeton (13:15.632) and Dartmouth (13:17.611) were sixth and seventh, respectively. Navy's second crew was less than nine seconds back of their brethren in the first boat as they crossed the line in 11th with a 13:28.762 time. The Mids' third and fourth crews placed back-to-back in 25th and 26th with respective results of 13:58.698 and 13:59.648. Navy's 'E' and 'F' finished in the second half of the field in 37th and 42nd place. Navy 'E' clocked in at 14:20.622, while Navy 'F' had a time of 14:42.468.

"We had a better day of racing today," remarked heavyweight head coach Rob Friedrich. "We showed good depth against some of the better teams in our league. We still have a lot of room to get faster and our athletes are excited to get back to work."

Sunday's action closed the fall season for the heavyweights, while the lightweights have one more competition, next Saturday's Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Va.
