FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The Navy lightweight crew program wrapped up its fall 2019 slate with racing at the Head of the Occoquan on Saturday. Looking to give its freshmen competitors one more chance to hit the water, the Mids entered four crews of plebes for racing on the 4.7k course on the Occoquan Reservoir at Sandy Run Regional Park. After the completion of the Men's Collegiate Varsity Eights and Men's Collegiate Frosh/Novice Eights races, Navy came away with a trio of top-three results.
Â
First on the water on Saturday was a single crew of Midshipmen in the Men's Collegiate Varsity Eights race. One of 13 boats in the field, Navy's squad placed third overall with a time of 15:32.31. The Mids clocked in behind a pair of Georgetown boats that swept the top-two spots at 14:55.29 and 15:22.18, respectively.

The second event with Midshipmen competitors was the Men's Collegiate Frosh/Novice Eights race. Once again it was a battle at the top of the standings between Navy and Georgetown as the two schools occupied the top-three positions. While the Hoyas registered the first-place time of 15:42.40, the Mids were right behind in second and third place with respective efforts of 16:21.71 and 17:20.55. Navy would have made it three crews in a row as its third boat clocked in at 17:44.54, but was penalized 1:00 and dropped back to sixth place behind Pitt and Penn State. Overall, there were 15 boats from 13 schools in the event.
Â
Saturday's action concludes the 2019 fall racing schedule for the entire Navy rowing program as the heavyweights and women wrapped up their competitive slates earlier this season.
