Navy Defensive Coordinator Brian Newberry Named A Semifinalist For The Broyles Award


ANNAPOLIS, Md.--Navy defensive coordinator and safeties coach Brian Newberry is one of 15 semifinalists for the Broyles Award it was announced today by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation. The Broyles Award is an annual award given to honor the best assistant coach in college football. First awarded in 1996, it was named after former University of Arkansas men's athletic director Frank Broyles. 


Newberry has authored a stunning turnaround in the defensive fortunes for the Mids as Navy is better by a large margin in every major statistical category.  Navy is ranked in the Top 25 in rushing defense (15th, 90th in 2018), third down defense (24th, 121st in 2018) and total defense (24th, 86th in 2018).  The Mids have also made major improvements in scoring defense (35th up from 103rd), sacks (48th, up from 129th) and tackles for a loss (47th, up from 129th).


The Mids have gotten a three-and-out on 35 percent of its opponent drives and are averaging 3.9 three-and-outs per game.


Navy's 63 tackles for a loss (37 last year) are the most by a Navy team since 2008, while the 24 sacks (10 last year) are the most by a Navy team since 2006.


Joining Newberry as a finalist are: Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele, Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Snow, Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott, Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning, Indiana offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer, LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady, Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown, Minnesota offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos, SMU offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard and Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley.


From the list of 15, five finalists will be selected and the overall winner will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
