ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Cam Davis (Jr., Battlefield, Mo.) and John Carter Jr. (So., Spring Hill, Tenn.) each scored 24 points and the Navy men's basketball team (3-3) led for the last 37 minutes of a 72-61 victory over Cornell (1-6), Tuesday night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

The Big Red scored the first basket of the game, but a triple by Davis on Navy's ensuing possession put the Mids in front for what would prove to be the remainder of the evening.

The Davis-Carter tandem would account for 24 of Navy's first 30 points as the Mids opened up a 30-18 lead midway through the first half.  The margin would grow to as many as 16 points before the teams went into the locker room with Navy in front, 42-29.

The Mids made 57.7 percent (15-26) of their field goal attempts in the first half with Davis and Carter combining for a 10-of-15 effort from the floor and 30 points.

"I thought offensively we played the best we have played (this year)," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis. "We made baskets, we shared the ball, we really tried to emphasized driving the ball downhill. We haven't shot the ball well from the perimeter, so we added a couple of things the last few days trying to drive the ball downhill."

"We came out from the gate and wanted to prove a point that we weren't just comeback kids," said Davis.  "We can get up on a team and really start to play better with the word Coach DeChellis always says, 'focus' really well defensively, and then offensively we made some shots, too."

Navy quickly expanded its lead out to 20 points (51-31) four minutes into the second half.  Cornell chipped away at the margin and soon closed to within eight points at 58-50 with nine minutes still to play.

The teams traded a few baskets, then Davis drained a three-point shot to make the score 65-54 with 5:44 remaining.  A Cornell turnover was followed by a triple from Carter, then a missed shot by the Big Red led to a Davis jumper that pushed the lead out to 70-54 with just over four minutes left on the clock.

Navy ended the game shooting 49 percent from the floor and holding Cornell to an overall mark of 42.3 percent.  The Mids held a 36-29 lead on the glass, including a 12-8 advantage in offensive boards.  That resulted in Navy leading Cornell, 12-4, in second chance points.  The Mids also took good care of the basketball by committing 10 turnovers and forcing 12.

The 24 points by Davis bettered his previous career high of 19 set last year against Bryant.

"Cam will take a big shot," said DeChellis.  "He and Carter will take a big shot when they are open.  And they can make something happen."

Carter's 24 points was a season high and left him two points shy of tying his career-best mark of 26 set a year ago against Army.  Not to be lost in those numbers was the first career double-double by Greg Summers (So., Ocoee, Fla.).  After falling one carom short of a double-double in each of his last two games, he finished tonight's game with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.  Additionally, Sean Yoder (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) dished out five assists.

"John Carter played just great the first half," said DeChellis.  "He has been sick with the flu and didn't practice Sunday.  I thought in the first half he was good, Cam was good, Evan did some really good things that don't show up in here (the box score).  It was a total team effort."

Navy will head to Rhode Island for games Saturday at Brown and Monday at Bryant.
