ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– After closing regulation with a 6-0 run, the Navy (5-4) men's basketball team scored nine of the last 11 points of overtime to rally for a 53-51 victory over Marist (1-5), Saturday night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

"I'm really proud of our kids," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis.  "We found a way to win the game and that's what teams need to try to do."

Neither offense found any consistency in the first 20 minutes of the game as the teams went into halftime tied at 22.  The game remained close through the majority of the second half until Marist went on an 8-2 run to take a 42-36 lead with 4:26 showing on the clock.

The next scoring took place with two minutes remaining when Evan Wieck (Sr., Amarillo, Texas) made a pair of free throws.  A Marist offensive foul, a Navy missed shot and a missed field goal attempt by the Red Foxes was followed by Cam Davis (Jr., Battlefield, Mo.) being fouled and making one of two free throw attempts with 38.1 seconds left that cut the margin down to three points.

Forced to foul, the Mids sent Tyler Sagl to the free throw line with 28.3 seconds remaining and he missed the front end of the bonus.  Wieck grabbed the offensive rebound and the ball soon found its way into the hands of Greg Summers (So., Ocoee, Fla.), who drove down the middle of the lane and was fouled while making a lauyup with 15.3 seconds remaining.  He would sink the foul shot to tie the game at 42.

Marist wasn't able to get a good look at the basket against the Navy defense and ended up missing a challenged shot just before the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.

The Red Foxes scored on each of their first two possessions in the extra frame, then eventually took a 49-44 lead midway through the five-minute period.  Davis, who was 0-7 from three-point land and 1-12 from the field in all during regulation, drained a three-point shot on the ensuing Navy possession to pull the Mids to within two points at 49-47.  After a Marist offensive foul gave the ball back to the Mids, Tyler Nelson (Fr., Monroe, N.C.) connected on a three-point shot to give Navy its first lead of the overtime at 50-49 with 87 seconds left.

Each team missed a shot on its next respective offensive opportunity, then another Marist missed shot gave the ball back to Navy.  The Red Foxes were now forced to foul and they sent Davis to the charity stripe with 29.9 seconds left.  He missed both attempts, but Summers snuck in to grab the errant second shot and was fouled while attempting a layup.  He too would miss both efforts from the line, but after his second miss the ball was knocked out of bounds off of the hands of the Red Foxes with 25.3 seconds left.  Navy inbounded the ball to Luke Loehr (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), who was fouled with 23.8 seconds remaining.  He made both attempts to push the lead to 52-49.

Marist rushed the ball down the court and Michael Cubbage made a layup with 19.8 seconds still to play, which was immediately followed by a timeout by the Red Foxes.

Navy inbounded the ball to Loehr in front of the Marist bench.  The Red Foxes tied up Loehr with 16.3 seconds left, and gained possession on the jump ball.  Navy's defense took away several potential clean looks at the basket for Marist until Cubbage attempted a baseline 12-foot jumper.  It would miss and Wieck grabbed the carom with eight-tenths of a second showing on the clock.

After walking to the other end of the court, Wieck missed his first shot from the line.  Admitting afterward that he was intentionally trying to miss his second try, he instead made it to make the score 53-51.  Marist called timeout then, after the Red Foxes were about to inbound the ball, Navy called timeout.  The Red Foxes did about the only thing they could do: throw the ball the majority of the length of the court.  The lofted pass was batted around by several hands 20 feet from the basket along the right sideline before falling to the ground without a shot being attempted.

Navy ended the game shooting 32 percent from the floor, which included a 3-6 effort in overtime.  The Mids were 16-50 from the field, made 7-23 (30.4%) of their three-point attempts and were 14-23 (60.9%) from the foul line for the 45-minute game.  Marist shot 35.8 percent from the floor (19-53), was 7-19 (36.8%) from three-point land and made 6-8 foul shots (75%).

Navy committed 13 turnovers in the game and forced Marist into 16 turnovers. The Mids committed just four turnovers after halftime while the Red Foxes committed 11 turnovers in the last 25 minutes of the game.

Navy's bench scored 16 points in the game, with freshmen accounting for 13 of those points.

"We had a lot of freshmen on the floor," said DeChellis.  "A lot of freshmen got a lot of minutes.  Sean Yoder (Fr., Dublin, Pa.) made a big basket, Tyler made a big basket, Daniel Deaver (Fr., Falls Church, Va.) had a good first half.  We had freshmen playing a lot of minutes and I thought they did a good job."

Wieck was 4-5 from the floor and 3-4 from the foul line to score a Navy-best 11 points.  He additionally shared the team's rebounding lead with Summers as each grabbed six boards.  Summers also registered three blocked shots.  Davis just missed reaching double figures in points as he finished with nine points and six assists in 41 minutes of playing time.

"If you would have told me Cam Davis would go two out of 14 (from the field) and one for eight (from the three-point line) and John Carter Jr. (who left the game with 15:45 remaining after being hit in the head) only scores one basket and we win, I'm telling you I don't know that was going to happen," said DeChellis.  "Those are the two guys who are going to score the ball for you.  But other guys stepped up and did a nice job.

"We came back in regulation, then they made two baskets early in overtime but we found a way to come back in this thing.  Tyler Nelson hit a big three and Luke Loehr hit his free throws.  Defensively we were okay and found a way to win the game."

Navy will take a break from games as the Brigade of Midshipmen begin final exams on Monday.  The Mids will play one more game Dec. 20 vs. Mount St. Mary's prior to taking another short break for the Christmas holiday.
