ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team won all but two points in posting a pair of victories on Sunday. The Mids (8-2) defeated Howard (0-2) by the score of 7-0 in a match played at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis and won a 5-2 decision at NJIT (0-2) at the Naimoli Family Tennis and Recreation Center in Newark, N.J.
Navy lost only one set in defeating Howard.
Cameron Kirkpatrick (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif.) and
Sam Vagner (Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.) posted a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles, then
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and
Matthew Lee (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) combined for a 6-2 win at the No. 1 flight to assure the Mids of the doubles point. Completing the sweep was Navy's No. 2 tandem of
Jonathan Dollahite (Fr., Orem, Utah) and
Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.). The two Mids defeated Cole Guttens and Sagar Raju by the score of 7-5.
Vagner gave the Mids their second point of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. O'Brien followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 5 flight, then Kirkpatrick won a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 4 singles to give the Mids their match-clinching fourth team point.
Also winning matches for Navy were, in finish order, Lee at No. 2, Dollahite at No. 3 and Durham at No. 1.
The doubles point between the Mids and the Highlanders came down to the third and final match left on the courts. Navy earned the point when
Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.) combined for a 7-5 victory at the No. 3 flight over Pablo Bejarano and Abdullah Fouad.
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 2 flight.
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) then won a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Mids. The Highlanders would close to within 3-2 thanks to their wins at the Nos. 3 and 4 flights. Kjellberg promptly posted a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) victory at No. 5 singles to clinch the match. Kahatapitiya won a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) decision at No. 6 singles to close out play.
"Romesh and Jan delivered in both doubles and singles," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "They played very poised with the doubles point up for grabs to give us a 1-0 lead. They both were strong again in singles to record our fourth and fifth team points by winning two close and competitive matches.
"Andrew and Derrick also had good wins at the top of our singles lineup."
NJIT recorded a 6-1 victory over Navy last year in the inaugural match between the programs.
Navy will be back in the Tose Family Tennis Center Saturday for matches against Monmouth (9 a.m.) and George Mason (12:30 p.m.).
