IRVINE, Calif. –– Gonzaga (9-4) won the doubles point and the first three singles matches to finish to record a 4-0 victory over the Navy (16-9) men's tennis team Wednesday afternoon at the Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif.
The teams played three very close doubles matches. The Zags came away with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 flights by the identical score of 6-4. In the remaining match, Navy's No. 1 tandem of
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) were in a tiebreaker against Sam Feit and Risdhan O'Sullivan. The Mids held a 5-4 lead in the seven-point breaker to decide the set when play was halted due to the doubles point being decided.
Gonzaga would record straight-set wins at the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 flights to close out the match. The additional matches were all in third sets when the Zags recorded the match-clinching fourth team point.
"We had our opportunities in all three doubles matches," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "Gonzaga came up with some great shots to win the first two matches to finish. They also played terrific at five and six singles to take a 3-0 lead. The four remaining matches were closer, but they proved to be too good and closed us out at three."
Navy will finish its spring break trip to Southern California with a match Wednesday evening at Point Loma.
