Offense Heats Up in Baseball’s 14-3 Victory at Villanova

Navy scored nine runs in a three-inning span to sweep Villanova

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Navy baseball team (10-7) hit .359 at the plate with five hitters recording multi-hit games in the Midshipmen's 14-3 win over Villanova (3-13) at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. Navy set a new season-high for runs scored in a game with 14 on Wednesday.

Christian Policelli (Fr., Walkersville, Md.) hit his first career home run for the Midshipmen with a grand slam, while Evan Lowery (Jr., Williamsburg, Va.) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for Navy. Liam Lowery (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) and Christian Hodge (Sr., Winder, Ga.) drove in three runs apiece.

"We got our offense from a lot of different people today" head coach Paul Kostacopoulos said after the victory. "Christian Policelli had the big hit today with a grand slam. It was a 1-0 game at the time and that got us going. We also did a nice job of executing in the fifth inning, where we had the bases loaded and scored another three runs. Christian Hodge finished it off with a three-run homer. Evan Lowery was really good today at the top of the order and Liam Lowery picked up his RBIs. We had a complete one through nine effort on offense.

"Colin Taeschner was very good again on the mound in his start. Trent Topping also did a really nice job. We are starting to find a little flow not only with our offense but also with our pitching staff."

For the second-straight day, Villanova got out on the front foot against Navy with a run in the third inning. Following a one-out triple, Dylan McNary scored on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Toohers to put the Wildcats ahead, 1-0.

Once again, the Midshipmen had an answer in the next half inning as they scored four runs in the frame to grab a 4-1 lead. After the first two hitters were retired in order, Navy started a rally with back-to-back singles from Hodge and Jacob Williamson (Jr., Sims, N.C.). The Midshipmen loaded the bases with Zach Stevens (Fr., Lexington, Mass.) reaching on a walk. Policelli delivered the big hit in the inning with a grand slam to erase the deficit and put Navy on top, 4-1, after the top of the fourth inning.

The offense for the Midshipmen was just starting to heat after its four-run fourth inning with multi-run innings in three-straight at-bats. In the top of the fifth inning, Navy loaded the bases once again and Liam Lowery singled back up the middle to score one run and then with one out, Williamson drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk. The scoring came to a close in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly from Stevens to extend the Navy lead to 7-1.

In the top of the sixth inning, Liam Lowery doubled to the gap in right-center field to plate Evan Lowery and Zach Biggers (Jr., Walhalla, S.C.) with two outs to extend Navy's lead to 9-1.

The streak of runs for the Midshipmen ended in the seventh inning after Policelli was stranded at first base following a two-out single.

Hodge belted his first home run of the season and put the Midshipmen ahead, 12-1, with a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning.

The Wildcats plated a run on a pair of hits in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Trey Braithwaite (So., Winchester, Va.) came in with the bases loaded and struck out the two batters he faced to get the Midshipmen out of the jam and keep them ahead by 10 runs.

In the ninth inning, Navy loaded the bases with no outs and Matt Wolff (Fr., Fishers, Ind.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice to put the Midshipmen back on top by 11 runs and Michael Coritz (Jr., Clifton, Va.) followed with an RBI single to give Navy a 14-2 lead.

Villanova added on a run in the ninth inning, but the Midshipmen plated a season-high 14 runs en route to a 14-3 victory to complete the sweep against the Wildcats.
