ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy baseball team (2-6) suffered a 3-0 loss on Saturday afternoon to Massachusetts to start its weekend at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
Sunday's schedule has been altered and Navy will play two games. The Midshipmen will first take on Central Connecticut State at 10 a.m. and will then face UMass following at approximately 1:30 p.m. Both games are slated to take place at Max Bishop Stadium.
The Midshipmen only recorded five hits in the game and were shutout for the second time this season. In a no-decision,
Noah Song (Claremont, Calif.) threw seven innings of shutout baseball and had 10 strikeouts in the game, where he allowed only three hits. Song surpassed the 300-strikeout mark in his career and now sits at 303, which ranks third all-time in the program record book. He is just the third pitcher in program history to record 300 strikeouts at Navy.
"It was a 0-0 ballgame through seven innings and UMass found a way to scratch some runs across in the eighth inning," head coach
Paul Kostacopoulos said after the game. "[Justin] Lasko had three pitches working and we have not been very adept in handling that. We have to get better at that offensively. Noah pitched very well I thought, but we just have to find a way to generate some offense."
Both offenses struggled out of the gate with eight hits combined through seven innings. Navy did not record multiple hits in an inning on Saturday and the Midshipmen did not get a baserunner to third base throughout the game.
Song started out strong on the mound with five strikeouts through the first two innings. In his seven innings, he only allowed the Minutemen to record three hits and Song walked just two. Massachusetts did not have more than one runner on base in each of the first seven innings.
The Minutemen got their offense going in the eighth inning after scratching across three runs on three hits in the inning. In the eighth inning, Massachusetts sent seven batters to the plate to score its three runs.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the final two innings, the Midshipmen were unable to record a hit and they got one runner on base off an error. Navy left six runners on base in the 3-0 loss to the Minutemen.
Navy's duo of
Evan Lowery (Jr., Williamsburg, Va.) and
Liam Lowery (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) had four of the team's five hits after going a combined 4-for-7 at the plate.
Out of the bullpen,
Dalton Baker (Fr., Sebring, Fla.) suffered the loss in his first collegiate decision after allowing three runs on three hits in his inning of work.
Trent Topping (Fr., Temecula, Calif.) tossed one inning and allowed just one hit.
Justin Lasko (1-0) threw a complete-game shutout after allowing just five hits and eight strikeouts.
The Midshipmen are back in action on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Navy will host Central Connecticut State at 10 a.m. and will then take on Massachusetts at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday to finish out the weekend.
