ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's tennis (12-6) finished off its 12-match homestand on Saturday afternoon going 1-1 at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Midshipmen first dropped a 5-2 contest to Seton Hall but rebounded to beat Johns Hopkins, 5-2.
Navy will now head to Florida for its spring break trip, where three matches are currently slated for the Midshipmen. Navy will not return home until Saturday, April 6 for its Senior Day against Boston University and Rider.
Seton Hall 5, Navy 2
In their first dual of the day, the Midshipmen fell behind to Seton Hall after dropping the doubles point. Navy got off to a strong start with a win at No. 2 doubles after
Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) and
Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) rolled to a 6-1 victory over Thandy Kangwa and Minja Gligic.
The Midshipmen were unable to keep the momentum going over the final two doubles matches after dropping both contests. At No. 1 doubles,
Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and
Catalina Rico (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) suffered a 6-2 loss to Anicka Fajnorova and Regina Pitts. In the final doubles bout on the court at No. 3,
Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) and
Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) lost a 6-3 decision to Malody Taal and Mekeila Erspamer.
At the start of singles competition, Navy was able to rebound and take a 2-1 lead in the dual.
Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) got the first point of the day for the Midshipmen with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles against Erspamer. At No. 6 singles,
Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) put Navy ahead, 2-1, following her 6-0, 6-3 win against Anniek Jansen.
The Midshipmen were unable to keep the momentum and the lead as the Pirates won the final four matches to clinch the victory.
Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.) lost in straight sets to Fajnorova, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot. Klopfer suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss at No. 3 singles to Taal and Seton Hall clinched the match at No. 2 singles after Pitts swept Hodge, 6-4, 6-3.
In the lone match that went to a third set,
Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) lost the first set, 6-3, to Gligic, but rallied to win the second set, 7-5. In a tiebreaking third set, Gligic edged Corpuz, 1-0 (12-10), to win the match and seal the 5-2 victory for the Pirates.
Navy 5, Johns Hopkins 2
In the second match of the day for Navy, it rebounded to end the homestand with a victory. The Midshipmen won the doubles point against Johns Hopkins with the first two wins. At No. 3 doubles, Moore and
Brooke Bogdanovich (So., Suwanee, Ga.) got Navy off to a strong start with a 6-1 win against Katie Gauch and Evelyn Chang. In the top-seeded doubles match, the freshmen pair of Corpuz and Komarraju won a 6-1 match against Anjie Kashyap and Sophia Strickland.
The Blue Jays avoided the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles after Dhanya Asokumar and Kimberly Zou beat
Tina Li (So., Wexford, Pa.) and
Danika Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.).
Holding a 1-0 lead in the match, Dervishian doubled the Navy lead with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles against Strickland. Rico pushed the Mids on the brink of victory following her 6-1, 6-2 win against Asokumar at the No. 3 spot.
Chang got Johns Hopkins on the board with a straight-set win against Li at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Bogdanovich clinched the match for the Midshipmen following her 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory at No. 6 singles over Gauch.
In the final two matches on the court, the Blue Jays earned their second singles win of the day at No. 4 singles with Zou earning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win against Kahatapitiya. Deng capped off the match at No. 1 singles after securing a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Kashyap as Navy won a 5-2 match to end their home stretch.
The Midshipmen are now away from home for their next six matches. Navy starts its spring break slate on Monday, March 11 against Saint Leo at 11 a.m. and then Lees-McRae at 4 p.m. in Florida.
