ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– After being part of the winning duo that gave the Navy (21-13) men's tennis team the doubles point in its match against Georgetown (3-10),
Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.) won the last singles match left on the courts to give the Mids a 4-3 victory over the Hoyas Sunday afternoon in Annapolis.
Navy also dropped a 4-3 decision to Wagner (5-3) on Sunday in Maryland's capital city.
"It was a great weekend of tennis for the team," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner.
Navy swept the three doubles matches from Georgetown to take a 1-0 lead.
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) combined for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, then the Mids earned the point when their No. 3 tandem of
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Kjellberg notched a 6-3 win.
The remaining match was extended into a tiebreaker, and the Navy duo of
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.) and
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) won the breaker by the score of 7-4.
"Our doubles teams played really well to get us the 1-0 lead," said Garner.
The Mids would then increase their advantage to 3-0 thanks to straight set wins by, in order, Thompson at No. 2 singles and Ton at No. 1 singles.
The Hoyas, who had defeated the Mids in each of the last three seasons, soon tied the match at 3-3 with each of those decisions also coming in straight sets. In the last match left on the courts, Kjellberg held on for a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win over Charlie Sharton at No. 5 singles to close out the victory for the Mids.
"In singles," said Garner, "Andrew and Derrick played well to get us to three points. Jan played very well with the match tied to give us the win."
The doubles point between the Mids and the Seahawks came down to the last match left on the courts. Navy won the first match to finish ––
Matthew Lee (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and
Jack McBride (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.), won, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles –– but Wagner won the remaining two matches by the identical score of 6-3.
Wagner proceeded to build a 3-0 lead before Navy rallied.
Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) placed Navy's first point of the match on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles, then McBride posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 flight. When
Sam Vagner (Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.) won a 6-2, 6-2 decision for the Mids at No. 6 singles, the score was tied at 3-3.
The remaining match at No. 3 singles saw Lucas Gonzalez win the first set from Lee, 7-5. Lee won set number two, 6-4. The pair would need a third-set tiebreaker to decide the match. Gonzalez would edge Lee, 8-6, in the first-to-seven-points breaker to give the Seahawks the victory.
"The team did a great job recovering from losing a close doubles point," said Garner. "Jack, Conners and Sam got us back to even at 3-3. Matthew lost the first set and was down a break in the second, but fought back to force a third set, and came back again to send the match into a tiebreaker. It was such a close tiebreaker and a tough one to lose, but it was an incredible match with great energy and passion from both teams."
Navy will be back in action on April 31 when the Mids play at Boston U. and play host to Rider.
