ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  Tewaaraton Award nominee Michael Sowers produced nine points, while Phillip Robertson and Emmet Cordrey scored five goals apiece to lead Princeton (2-2) to a 19-11 victory over the 20th-ranked Navy men's lacrosse team (3-2, 1-0 Patriot League) Tuesday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It was the first meeting between the two programs since the Midshipmen dealt Princeton an 8-7 loss in the 2004 NCAA Semifinals.

"It was pretty clear we had no answer for Princeton's offense, especially the Sowers kid," said eighth-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell. "He is one of the most dynamic players in Div. I lacrosse. We threw the kitchen sink at him, but they were just too good for us tonight.

"There were a few things we did well and I'm happy about, but against these better offenses like Maryland and now Princeton, we've got to figure out a way to defend them."

The scoring came fast and furious for the Tigers in the opening minutes, building a 3-0 lead just over four minutes into the game.

The Mids, however, fought back with an unassisted tally by rookie attackman Nick Cole (Fr / Ashburn, Va.) followed by an extra-man strike by Christian Daniel (So / Owings, Md.) to cut the Tigers' lead to one (3-2) with 5:16 to go in the opening quarter. Princeton scored two of the final three goals in the period to take a 5-3 lead.

Navy had little answer for Sowers in the second period, as Princeton outscored the Mids 6-2 with Sowers playing a hand in four of the six and the Tigers took an 11-5 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers extended their lead to seven with a goal by second-year attackman Chris Brown just over two minutes into the second half.

Navy co-captain Ryan Wade's (Sr / Coronado, Calif.) unassisted goal at the 11:11 mark sparked a three-goal run that saw the Mids get to within four (12-8) with 8:52 remaining in the quarter. In addition to Wade's goal, first-year starting midfielder Michael Foster (So / Manassas, Va.) beat the shot clock with a five-yard goal as he was falling to the ground. Tewaaraton Award nominee Greyson Torain (Sr / Glen Burnie, Md.), meanwhile, capped the run when he took the ball from the midfield line and beat his defender from the right elbow.

Princeton's high-octane offense went on to outscore the Mids' 7-3 over the final 22 minutes of the game to earn its second win of the season.

The Mids, who put just 22 of their 42 shots on goal compared to Princeton who put 36 of its 48 on goal, were led by Foster's first collegiate hat trick, while Daniel and Torain both pitched in a pair of goals.

"You can see the confidence starting to kick in with Michael," said Sowell. "There's probably not a harder worker on the team, as you will see him put in the extra work after practice. It's nice to see his hard work pay off."

Wade turned in a team-high five points with a goal and four assists as he is now 10 points shy of 100 career points. He extended his point-scoring streak to 29 straight games with a point (23-54=77) which stands 11th in the country, while Sowers pushed his consecutive games with a point streak to 32 (78-114=192).

Daniel has now scored a goal in 16 games in a row (36G) which stands 13th nationally, while Princeton's Chris Brown has goals in each of the last 17 (35G).

Ryan Kern (Jr / Middletown, Del.), who became just the 14th keeper in school history to reach 300 saves (312), played a solid game between the pipes, producing 16 of the Mids' 17 saves, just two of his career high.

Navy, who was dominated by the Tigers at the faceoff "x" in the opening period (7-2), came back to split the faceoffs over the remainder of the game (12 of 24).

The 30 combined goals were the most in a game involving Navy since the Midshipmen defeated Holy Cross, 21-12, on March 1, 2014.

The Midshipmen return to conference play on Saturday when they make their first road trip of the 2019 campaign. Navy will travel to Easton, Pa. to bettle Lafayette with faceoff set for 12:00 pm.
