PRINCETON, N.J. - The Navy heavyweight crew team will have two of its top rowers continue competition this summer after accepting invitations to the 2019 US Men's Under-23 National Team Selection Camp. Juniors
Andrew Knoll and
John Lamb will each be in the camp that will be held in Seattle under the direction of the University of Washington men's head coach Michael Callahan. The camp will help decide the U-23 men's eight, four and four-plus crews that will compete at the 2019 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Sarasota, Florida, July 24 through 28.
In the midst of their spring collegiate season both Knoll and Lamb have been strong contributors to the Mids' first varsity eight crew rowing from the middle of the boat, Knoll has participated in four of the Mids' five races from the fifth seat, while Lamb has been in the sixth seat all spring. So far, Navy's first varsity eight boat is 5-3 with victories over No. 11 Penn, No. 16 Cornell, No. 19 Drexel, Georgetown and Holy Cross.
Individually, Knoll (Greenback, Tenn.) has made his name in the international rowing community as he suited up with the United States' men's four crew last summer at the 2018 World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland and the 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Poznan, Poland. Additionally, the junior was the 2018 Under-23 Indoor Rowing Champion in February as he completed a 2,000-meter erg race with a time of 5:56.1. Through his first two and a half seasons rowing with Navy, he has appeared in 20 races for the Midshipmen with the first varsity eight.
Lamb (Hong Kong) has had a similar career at Navy as he has been with Knoll in the first varsity eight crew in 20 races over his first two-plus seasons with the Mids, as well. Lamb comes from a family of collegiate rowers as both of his older sisters Eneka at Duke and Alicia at Princeton participated in the sport.
Navy's heavyweight crew program has had invitees to four of the past five U.S. Under-23 camps dating back to 2015. From those camps, Knoll, Julian Hagberg (USNA '16) and Tim Tracey (USNA '16) have all earned spots on crews for international competitions.
