PRINCETON, N.J. – Facing off versus No. 9 Syracuse and No. 12 Cornell in a neutral site matchup at Lake Carnegie on Saturday afternoon, the No. 16 Navy heavyweight crew team came away with a win in the fourth varsity eight contest and a trio of runner-up results. In all four races, the duo of Navy and Syracuse finished atop the standings with Cornell coming in third.
Â
Racing in reverse order the Mids' fourth varsity eight got the day off to a strong start as they got out of the blocks early and powered their way to an open water win by 7.8 seconds over the field. Navy completed the 2,000-meter trek of water on Lake Carnegie in a time of 5:45.1 versus a 5:53.3 mark for Syracuse. Cornell placed third at 5:56.4, while Navy's fifth crew battled back late to come in close behind the Big Red with a time of 5:58.6.Â
Â
Next up, the third varsity race saw all three boats settle into their final standings quite early on as Syracuse took home that victory with a 5:40.2 time. Navy made its move over the middle 1,000, but didn't have an answer for the Orange down the stretch as the Mids clocked in second at 5:44.5. Cornell finished third with a time of 5:47.7.
Â
The second varsity contest saw a similar result play out as all three teams finished within 7.7 seconds of each other. Though Navy turned in a strong start and rowed aggressively over the first 1,000 meters, Syracuse's consistency won out as the Orange pulled away for a 4.2-second victory, 5:36.2 to 5:40.4. The Big Red came in 3.5 seconds behind the Mids at 5:43.9.
Â
In the spotlight race of the day with the Goes Trophy on the line for the victor, all three teams were up for the moment and competed stroke-for-stroke down the Lake Carnegie course. Tightly packed at the 750-meter mark, Syracuse made its move to jump into the lead by the midway point. Over the second half of the race, the Mids chased the Orange, while pulling away from the Big Red. Down the stretch, Navy closed on Syracuse, but came up 2.1 seconds short, 5:29.5 to 5:31.6. Cornell was 2.2 seconds behind Navy at 5:33.8.
Â
"Today was bittersweet," remarked head coach
Rob Friedrich. "We really believe our crews are moving faster than the beginning of the season and we saw that with some great races today, but we still came up short on our goals as a team."
Â
Navy will be back in action in seven days as the Midshipmen will race in the Adams Cup event in Boston, Mass. next Saturday morning. The Harvard Crimson will host Navy and Penn in the team's annual trophy competition on the Charles River.
