Attackmen Lead Ninth-Ranked Syracuse Past Mids

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  The ninth-ranked Syracuse men's lacrosse team (9-3) outscored Navy, 10-3, over the second and third quarters en route to an 18-9 victory over the Midshipmen (5-7) Saturday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It was the first game played between the two squads  in Annapolis since 1982 when Navy dealt the Orange a 12-11 loss.

"I thought we got over our emotional hangover, but we found ways to make mistakes that came back to haunt us," said eighth-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell.  "Syracuse is a good team and they have excellent shooters. They have some slick sticks and they are playing with confidence right now."

The opening period was a see-saw affair with the two teams battling toe-to-toe. The Orange jumped out to a 3-1 advantage with goals by three different players, including the first of three in the game by starting midfielder Jamie Trimboli. Navy, though, answered by scoring two of the final three goals, including a strike by attackman Nick Cole (Fr / Ashburn, Va.) with 8.9 seconds remaining. Cole wrapped around the left side of the cage and gained the needed space between he and defenseman Marcus Cunningham to flip his shot over his shoulder and past keeper Drake Porter to pull the Mids to within one (4-3) after the first stanza.

The Mids knotted the game at four apiece less than two minutes into the second quarter when senior co-captain Ryan Wade (Sr / Coronado, Calif.) raced down the right alleyway and punched in his 18th goal of the season.

The Orange answered with back-to-back goals by senior attackman Bradley Voigt to push their lead back to two at 6-4.

Navy trimmed the lead to one when second-year middie Michael Foster (Manassas, Va.) found fellow midfielder Ian Burgoyne (Sr / Darien, Conn.) who charged down the left side, switching from his right hand to left to score his first goal of the season.

Syracuse went on to outscore the Mids 4-1 in the third and 4-3 in the fourth en route to capturing just its ninth win in the 29-game series.

Wade led the way for the Mids with a four-point evening, scoring one goal to accompany his three assists. He has now scored a point in 36 consecutive contests, while dealing out assists in each of the 33. He moved into a tie for eighth on Navy's all-time assists list alongside Glen Miles (1983-86) with 75 over the last four seasons. Meanwhile, co-captain Greyson Torain (Sr / Glen Burnie, Md.) chipped in a goal and an assist and rookie Jack Sweeney (Glenelg, Md.) punched in a pair of goals. Torain also paced the Mids with six ground balls, joining the program's all-time top 20 with 138 for his career.

Faceoff specialist Nick Barry (Fr / Islip, N.Y.) won 14 of the 24 draws he took, while Joe Miller (Fr / Wading River, N.Y.) won 3 of 7.

Netminders Ryan Kern (Jr / Middletown, Del.) (9) and Spencer Rees (So / Baltimore, Md.) (1) combined for 10 saves on the day.

The starting attack line for Syracuse - Bradley Voigt (5G), Nate Solomon (2G, 3A) and Stephen Rehfuss (2G, 5A) - combined for 17 points, while 10 players accounted for its 18 goals in the game. Goalkeeper Drake Porter finished with 16 saves.

The Midshipmen close out the regular season next Friday when they play host to Boston University (10-4, 5-2 Patriot League). Action is slated for 4:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. A free live video stream will be available on PatriotLeague.TV, while Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller will have the call on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV. Navy will also honor its 10 seniors prior to the start of the game.
