ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight crew program will continue its regular season action with a three-team contest on the Charles River this Saturday morning. The fans in Boston will get the chance to watch three top-12 teams battle for supremacy over a five-race slate when No. 3 Harvard, No. 11 Penn and No. 12 Navy face off. The event starts at 7:00 a.m. with the fifth varsity boats hitting the water and culminates at 8:36 a.m. with the first varsity crews racing for the Adams Cup.
The entire schedule for Saturday will see the races go off in 24-minute increments as the fourth varsity eights step in after the 5V at 7:24 a.m. The third varsity eights will be up next at 7:48 a.m. before the second crews go head-to-head starting at 8:12 a.m. As mentioned above, the prestigious Adams Cup will be on the line at 8:36 a.m. After the action is complete, the Clothier Cup will go home with the winner of the team points competition.
Saturday's meet will be aired live via the ESPN+ ap and webstreaming service. Subscription fees will apply.
What's at Stake
Adams Cup
The cup is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Navy, Harvard and Penn. The trophy was placed into competition in 1933 and honors Charles Francis Adams, who was a Harvard graduate and former Secretary of the Navy. All-time Harvard has 55 wins, while Penn has 14 titles and Navy is one back with 13, respectively.
Clothier Cup
This will be the fourth annual race of the Clothier Trophy, which is a team points trophy for the Navy/Harvard/Penn heavyweight race. It was donated by the Navy Crews of 1984.
Last Year's Adams Cup Competition
Racing on the Severn River in Annapolis last April 21, Harvard was the class of the field in the Adams Cup competition with a 5:59.7 result. Navy and Penn battled it out with the Quakers edging the Mids, 6:06.3 to 6:09.4. Navy finished runner-up in each of the next three races before taking first place in the fifth varsity eight event with a time of 6:24.0. The Mids' 5V, 6V and 7V all finished ahead of the Crimson's fifth boat.
