Lightweight Crew to Host Penn in Callow Cup Competition

Teams to race on the "Wisconsin" course up water

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 7 Navy lightweight crew rounds out the regular season portion of its 2019 spring schedule with a quartet races versus No. 6 Penn this Saturday morning. In the 100th year of lightweight rowing between the two institutions, Navy and Penn kicked off the series back in 1919 with the Mids topping the Quakers. That rivalry will hit the Severn River beginning at 7:40 a.m. when the fourth varsity race goes off. The highlighted event on Saturday morning is the first varsity race at 8:40 a.m. with the Callow Cup on the line.

The schedule on Saturday is augmented with the Mids and Quakers' third varsity crews going head-to-head at 8:00 a.m. before the second crews do the same at 8:20 a.m.

NOTE: Due to the forecast of strong winds, the action between Navy and Penn will take on the Navy "Wisconsin" Course, that has no spectator viewing. The Navy "Wisconsin" Course is located from Saltworks Creek to the Route 50 Bridge, along the west shore of the Severn river.

There will be no public spectating from the shore. The homes that line the Severn are privately owned, and there is no trespassing allowed. The Route 50 Bridge does not have a shoulder lane, thus watching from the bridge is impossible.

What's at Stake
Callow Cup
Put into rotation beginning in 1955, the trophy has been given to the winner of the varsity race between Navy and Penn every year except 1973. The trophy is named after Russell "Rusty" Callow, who coached at both Penn and Navy and retired in 1959 after being associated with rowing for more than 50 years. All-time, Navy holds a 33-30 advantage, though Penn has taken the cup home in three of the last four seasons.

1919 Trophy
Originally presented at the first-ever meeting between the Mids and Quakers, the trophy now serves as the team points prize for best combined results in the annual meet.

Last Year's Navy-Penn Matchup
Navy had an excellent showing on the road versus Penn last season on April 28, 2018. Competing in a five-race meet, the Mids earned four victories over the Quakers on the Schuylkill River. Navy secured the Callow Cup with the first varsity win, as well as the 1919 Trophy for the most team points.

In first varsity Callow Cup race, Navy's top crew held off Penn for a 2.7-second margin of victory at 5:44.0-5:46.7. The Mids also defeated the Quakers in the 3V, 4V and 5V contests.
