SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Navy women's tennis team (23-8) started its postseason slate with a 4-0 victory over Colgate (5-15) on Friday evening at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport, Pa.
With the victory, the Midshipmen advance to the tournament semifinals to take on rival and third-seeded Army at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in the second of two semifinal matchups. The first semifinal features top-seeded Boston University taking on fourth-seeded Bucknell.
Navy's freshman duo of
Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and
Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) got the Midshipmen off to a strong start with a 6-1 win over Callie Bartimer and Ricki Lane at No. 3 doubles. Navy secured the doubles point at No. 2 doubles with
Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) and
Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) beating Madi Kiani and Lauren O'Brien, 6-2.
In the final doubles contest that went unfinished at No. 1,
Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and
Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) were leading Mackenzie Deeter and Jordan Williams, 4-3, when the Midshipmen won the doubles point.
Needing just three singles wins to clinch a spot in the semifinals and a date against Army on Saturday, Navy carried the momentum from the doubles win and won the first set in all six singles matches. The freshmen pair of Komarraju and Corpuz put Navy on the brink of victory. Komarraju won the first singles match for Navy at No. 4 against Kiani, 6-0, 6-0, and then Corpuz won in straight sets against Bartimer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
The freshmen for Navy swept the singles points to clinch the match for the Midshipmen with
Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) beating Nicole Condast at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2, to seal Navy's 4-0 win.
In the final three matches on the court that went unfinished, Navy won the first set in all three and was leading in the second set.
Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.) was leading 6-1, 3-2 at No. 1 singles, Hodge was up 7-5, 2-0 at No. 2 and Klopfer was a game away from winning her match at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 5-2 lead as the match came to an end.
Navy continues its postseason run on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Army in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals. The Black Knights earned a 4-0 victory over Lehigh in the quarterfinals on Friday.
