ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy baseball (33-14, 17-6 Patriot League) used a pair of strong starts from
Noah Song (Sr., Claremont, Calif.) and
Tommy Goodridge (So., San Diego, Calif.) along with an offensive explosion in game two to sweep Lehigh (20-22, 8-11 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon, 2-0 and 12-2, at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
Song tossed his second-straight, complete-game shutout to collect his 30th career win, which is the most career wins in program history. Goodridge went 6-2/3 innings to pick up his fourth win of the season and second in as many starts.
Jackson Zoch (Sr., San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) tied his career with six strikeouts in his 2-1/3 innings of relief in Navy's sweep. The Midshipmen allowed Lehigh to tally just four hits in game one and five hits in game two.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Midshipmen exploded for 16 hits and 12 runs to secure the victory in game two.
Michael Coritz (Jr., Clifton, Va.) and
Jacob Williamson (Jr., Sims, N.C.) each had three hits in the game with Williamson posted a team-high four RBIs.
Following Navy's sweep of Lehigh and Holy Cross' sweep of Army on Saturday, the Midshipmen's magic number to win the Patriot League regular-season title is just one game. A Navy victory on Sunday would clinch the regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the league tournament for the Midshipmen. If Navy drops both games on Sunday, Holy Cross and Army would need to split its doubleheader on Sunday for the Midshipmen to clinch the No. 1 seed and the league title.
"I thought we got great starts from both Noah [Song] and Tommy [Goodridge] today," head coach
Paul Kostacopoulos mentioned after the doubleheader. "Tommy had some adversity in the second inning with a runner on third and nobody out and he got out of that. We had the big inning right after Lehigh scored and Tommy got some confidence going and he really did a good job. Noah was outstanding again, Lehigh had one guy at third base the entire game and he struck out 15, so our starting pitching was very strong today.
"Levi Stoudt is a quality pitcher and he is very good. Zach [Biggers] came up with a big hit against him in game one and
Zach Stevens had a big hit with the home run. In those seven-inning games, sometimes that is the difference. In the second game, we had 16 hits and had the big eight-run inning, which led us forward to the win."
Navy 2, Lehigh 0
A pitchers' duel broke out in the first game of the doubleheader with the two teams combining for seven hits and just two runs, both coming from Navy.
Song controlled the Lehigh bats right from the get-go and struck out the first five hitters of the game. After back-to-back singles with two outs in the second inning, Song posted another strikeout to punch out the side in the first two innings.
After the two hits in the second inning, Song allowed just two more hits the remainder of the game. The biggest threat for Lehigh came in the sixth inning with a one-out hit by pitch, followed by a single that placed runners at the corners, but Song settled in and struck out the next two batters to leave a pair of Mountain Hawks stranded.
The Midshipmen took advantage of an error from Lehigh to take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Levi Stoudt had retired the first seven batters in order, but
Matt Wolff (Fr., Fishers, Ind.) reached base on an error and moved into scoring position following a groundout. With two outs and Wolff on second base,
Zach Biggers (Jr., Walhalla, S.C.) singled out to left field allowing Wolff to score and giving Navy a 1-0 lead.
Searching for some insurance runs in the second half of the game,
Zach Stevens (Fr., Lexington, Mass.) sent a home run over the wall in dead centerfield to double Navy's lead to two runs. The two-run lead was all the Midshipmen needed with Song on the mound as he secured the complete-game shutout with a perfect seventh inning and picking up pair of strikeouts to secure Navy's 2-0 lead and clinch a spot in the postseason for the Midshipmen.
Song (9-0) finished the game allowing just four hits and a hit by pitch as he did not walk a batter for the first time all season. Song also struck out 15 batters -- one shy of his career-high -- to push his season total to 133, which sets a new Patriot League record and also pushes him to 400 career strikeouts. The victory for Song also pushed him to 30 career wins as he is now the first pitcher in program history to reach 30 career wins. Song surpasses Chuck Davis' (1959-61) record of 29 wins. Song is now also tied for the program record with nine shutouts in his career.
Stoudt (3-3) suffered the loss after allowing two runs -- one earned -- in six innings of work where he struck out seven and walked two.
Navy 12, Lehigh 2
Lehigh was looking for the split in the second game as it took the early lead over the Midshipmen with a pair of second-inning runs. The Mountain Hawks got the first two runners aboard with a double and a walk. Then, Tyler Schreiner ripped a triple off the wall in right field to plate two runs and give Lehigh the 2-0 advantage. However, Goodridge rebounded with three-straight putouts to end the inning and leave Schreiner stranded at third base.
Navy did not waste any time to cancel out the Lehigh two-run inning. In the home half of the second inning, the Midshipmen scored eight runs on seven hits and a pair of errors to grab an 8-2 lead. Before the Mountain Hawks could register an out in the inning, they saw their two-run edge vanish and fell behind 3-2.
Stevens started the inning with a single and then after a wild pitch and an error he found himself on third base.
Christian Hodge (Sr., Winder, Ga.) got Navy on the board with an RBI single and Williamson followed with an RBI double to tie the game. The Midshipmen had three-straight run-scoring hits after
Liam Lowery (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) drove in Williamson with a single out to left field.
Following the first out of the second inning, Navy loaded the bases and Coritz drove in his two runs of the game with a single back up the middle to push the lead to 5-2 for the Midshipmen. Navy loaded the bases for the second time in the frame and scored its sixth run of the inning on a wild pitch with two outs. The miscues continued for Lehigh as it thought it got out of the jam with a routine groundball to short, but an errant throw brought in a run and kept the inning alive. Williamson made the Mountain Hawks pay for the error with his second RBI hit of the game with a single through the left side of the infield and giving Navy an 8-2 lead after two innings.
After giving up two runs in the second inning, Goodridge found his rhythm on the mound and retired six-straight batters and 15 of his last 17 batters faced to keep Lehigh at ease on offense.
Navy's offense scored in three-straight innings with a run in the fifth and sixth inning, followed by a two-run seventh inning.
In the fifth inning,
Liam Lowery hit his sixth home run of the season to start the frame and extend the Midshipmen's lead to 9-2.
Christian Policelli (Fr., Walkersville, Md.) drove in Hodge with a single after another two-out error hurt Lehigh in the sixth inning. Williamson capped off his four-RBI game with a two-RBI double down the left-field line in the seventh inning to give Navy a 12-2 advantage.
Zoch came in out of the bullpen and tossed a perfect 2-1/3 innings to seal Navy's win. Zoch struck out the first six batters he faced and got Schreiner to fly out to end the game and clinch the 12-2 victory for the Midshipmen.
Goodridge (4-0) went 6-2/3 innings to earn the win where he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks. The sophomore also struck out four batters in his second start of the season. Zoch matched his career-high with six strikeouts on Saturday.
Ethan Frohman (4-2) was tagged with the loss after going just the first 1-1/3 innings giving up seven runs -- six earned -- on seven hits.
The Midshipmen conclude their Patriot League slate on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Lafayette at Max Bishop Stadium. Prior to the game, Navy will honor its 2019 senior class on Senior Day starting at 12:45 p.m.
