CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Navy senior co-captains
Greyson Torain (Glen Burnie, Md.) and
Ryan Wade (Coronado, Calif.) were named to the 2019 All-Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Team announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Torain and Wade closed out their careers as two of the most accomplished midfielders in program history. Torain, who finished the season as the Mids' third-leading scorer with 37 points on 24 goals and 13 assists, is one of just 13 Navy players to earn All-Patriot League accolades at least three times and one of seven to capture first-team all-league recognition three times. Additionally, he is just the fourth offensive midfielder to garner all-league honors three times, joining brothers Steve (2004-05-06) and Billy Looney (2005-06-07) and Patrick Moran (2008-09-10).
Wade, meanwhile, is a two-time All-Patriot League honoree and was selected to the first team this spring after earning second-team recognition a year ago. He paced the Mids with a career-best 48 points on 20 goals and 28 assists this season and was the league's second-leading point producer (3.67 PPG) out of the midfield behind Loyola's Chase Scanlan (3.85).
The two players not only have a number of individual accomplishments to their credit, they also formed one of the most dominant midfield tandems in program history.
The following are several of those achievements ...
• Wade ended the season with the nation's 10th-longest point-scoring streak with a goal or an assist in each of the last 37 contests.
• Wade dealt out an assist in each of the last 34 games.
• Torain and Wade became the 34th and 35th players in school history to score 100 points and only the fifth set of classmates to achieve it.
• Torain and Wade are just the ninth and 10th midfielders in program history to score 100 points.
• Torain and Wade are the first midfield tandem to score 30 points each in a season ... they did it in both 2018 and '19.
• Torain tied for 16th on the all-time scoring list with 132 points and third all-time among midfielders (just 8 behind record holder Glen Miles).
• Wade tied for 21st on the all-time scoring list with 119 points and tied for fourth among midfielders.
• Wade is one of just four midfielders in school history to score 40 or more points in a season and the first in 30 years. His 48 points this spring are the third most by a midfielder all-time behind Glen Miles' 53 in 1986 and Brian Keith's 53 in 1989.
• Wade finished eighth on the Navy all-time assists list with 77 and is one of nine players in school history with 70 or more assists. The 77 assists are the most by a Navy player since Jon Birsner dealt out 105 from 2003-06.
• Wade is one of only two midfielders in school history to score 20 goals and deal out 20 assists in the same season, joining 1986 MacLaughlin Award winner Glen Miles.
• Torain is one of just 10 players in school history to rank among the school's top 20 in points (T16), goals (13) and assists (20). He also closed out his career tied for 18th on the all-time ground balls list (139) and sixth on the shots list (321).
• Torain started all 57 games in his career and produced a point in 50 of the 57.
• Wade was held without a point in just 3 games among the 43 in which he played over his career.
• Torain was named the the Tewaaraton Award Watch List for a second straight season.
• Torain was selected in both the MLL (Chesapeake Bayhawks) and the PLL (Chaos LC) drafts.
The all-league teams are comprised of 16 student-athletes on the first team and the second team each. Of the 32 players that made the teams, there are 12 seniors, 13 juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen. While Loyola Maryland led the way with the most first-team selections with five, Boston University followed with four. Loyola and Lehigh placed six total student-athletes on the all-league teams, while Army totaled five honorees. Holy Cross and Boston University each had four representatives, while Bucknell (3), Colgate (2) and Navy (2) round out the all-league selections.
A three-time All-American, Loyola's Pat Spencer became the first men's lacrosse player to earn Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors all four years, and he is one of four student-athletes in any Patriot League sport to earn the same annual awards four times. Army's Johnny Surdick, a Tewaaraton Award Semifinalist, was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year after averaging the sixth-most caused turnovers per game (2.21) in the country. Lehigh's Conor Gaffney stands fourth nationally with a 69.0 faceoff winning percentage (216-313) and earned Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year honors. Repeating as the league's goalkeeper of the year was Loyola senior Jacob Stover, while the nation's top freshman goal-scorer Chase Scanlan of Loyola was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. The William Lawson Coach of the Year Award went to Loyola's Charley Toomey, who directed the Greyhounds to their fourth Patriot League regular-season title in six years.
