DANBURY, Conn. - In the final ECAC weekly awards announcement of the year for men's gymnastics, the Navy program was honored with a pair of accolades as
Ryan McVay was named the ECAC Gymnast of the Week, while
Lucas Beltran collected another ECAC Specialist of the Week nod. The pair play leading roles in the Mids' strong effort at the two-day USAG Collegiate Championships this past weekend. Navy collected the team title for the first time since 2008, as well as three individual titles.
Competing in the 11-team event in Annapolis, Md., McVay came in first in the varsity division at the USAG Collegiate Championships in the All-Around on Friday with a career-high score of 78.75. He was second overall to Arizona State's Kiwan Watts, the club champ at 82.05. The sophomore from Roseville, Calif. ranked top-10 out of 50-plus gymnasts in the rings, parallel bars and high bar on Friday with a high of third place on the parallel bars at 13.50. In the event finals on Saturday, McVay placed eighth in parallel bars.
Entered in the vault and floor exercise events for Friday's team event, Beltran posted scores of 14.75 on the vault and 13.8 on the floor exercise as part of Navy's 7.15-point win over the 11-team field. Both scores qualified him for Saturday's event finals, his vault score on Friday was tops amongst 57 competitors. 24 hours later, the junior from Corpus Christi, Texas won the floor exercise event final with a 14.05 score, 0.25 more than the runner-up, as well as placed third on the vault with a 14.45.
This is the third career ECAC weekly award for McVay as he was named the league's Rookie of the Week on January 30 and February 6, 2018. In Beltran's case this is his fourth such honor from the conference after garnering the league's Rookie of the Week on Feb. 7, 2017 and Specialist of the Week on March 5 and 12, 2019. As a program in 2019, Navy gymnasts collected 10 weekly honors, including five Specialist of the Week, four Rookie and one Gymnast of the Week nods ...
