ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (20-6, 3-0 Patriot League) returns home for the first time since March 2 to host Boston University (9-8, 3-0 Patriot League) on Saturday at 11 a.m. for Senior Day at the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium. Following Saturday's home match, the Midshipmen travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell (11-4, 2-0 Patriot League) on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Prior to the match on Saturday morning against Boston, the Navy women's tennis program will recognize its senior captain,
Catalina Rico, who will be concluding her final regular-season matches with Navy.
The Midshipmen were also slated to face Rider on Saturday afternoon, but the match has been canceled and Navy will play just the one contest on Saturday.
Coming into the weekend, Navy, Boston and Bucknell are the final three unbeaten teams in the Patriot League standings. The Midshipmen and Terriers are tied at 3-0, while the Bison are just behind at 2-0.
Navy is currently on a nine-match winning streak after returning from its Spring Break trip and winning three-straight league matches. Last time out, the Midshipmen tallied a narrow 4-3 victory over rival Army to capture the 2019 Star Match over the Black Knights. In the match at Army, Navy rallied from losing the doubles point and winning four singles matches. Three of Navy's four singles wins came from freshmen.
Kacey Moore,
Katreina Corpuz and
Meghana Komarraju picked up wins in their first Army-Navy match, while junior
Kaylah Hodge rebounded from a doubles loss to win her singles contest. Komarraju also earned NAAA Athlete of the Week honors and Patriot League Women's Tennis Player of the Week accolades after clinching the victory for Navy at No. 5 singles.
On the season, Moore leads the Midshipmen with a record of 23-2 and she has 14-1 mark in dual matches this season. Moore is six singles wins behind
Amanda Keller's record of 29 singles wins in 2014-15 for most singles victories in a season. Komarraju and
Ansofi Wreder are tied for second on the team with 16 wins and Navy has 11 individuals with at least 10 singles victories.
In doubles competition, freshman
Annalise Klopfer has a record of 21-4 to lead the Mids. Klopfer is three doubles victories behind a trio of players from the 2017-18 squad that notched 24 doubles wins to set the single-season mark for doubles victories.
Miranda Deng is just behind Klopfer with a 19-7 record and like in singles, Navy has 11 players with at least 10 doubles wins this year.
Boston is currently on a three-match winning streak after winning the last three matches in 7-0 fashion. Last weekend, the Terriers swept home matches against Lafayette and Holy Cross to remain perfect in the Patriot League. Lilly Burchell leads Boston's singles charge with a 16-10 record and winning her last five matches playing mainly at No. 4 singles. The doubles pair of Emily Kim and Shelly Yaloz pace Boston with a 19-7 record and have gone 8-5 in duals.
Bucknell picked up a midweek victory at home against Lafayette, 6-1, to win back-to-back matches. The Bison's two league wins came on the road against Colgate, 6-1, to start the league slate and at home this week against Lafayette. Sofia Ayuso leads Bucknell with 22 singles victories this season where she has gone 12-3 in duals this spring. Three different players for the Bison have at least 15 singles wins this year. The duo of Cayla Koch and Paige Leavy have the best doubles record as a team at 19-5 and they have gone 10-3 at No. 1 doubles.
The Midshipmen are in the final stretch of the regular season with just four matches left on the year. Following the two matches this weekend, Navy will finish out the season with a home match against Georgetown on Friday, April 12 at 3 p.m. and then the Midshipmen hit the road to take on Loyola at 3 p.m. in Baltimore, Md., on Tuesday, April 16.
First serve on Saturday afternoon is set for 11 a.m. from the Fluegel-Moore Tennis Stadium at the Brigade Sports Complex. Navy travels to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on Bucknell for an 11 a.m. match on Sunday.
