Clutch Hitting Paces Navy to Doubleheader Sweep of Holy Cross

Zach Biggers went 4-for-7 with four RBIs on Saturday for Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy baseball team (24-10, 11-2 Patriot League) tallied three two-out runs in a 3-1 victory in game one against Holy Cross (8-24, 4-5 Patriot  League) and the Midshipmen used a three-run seventh inning to come from behind and beat the Crusaders, 4-3, in game two  to complete the sweep on Saturday at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

Zach Biggers (Jr., Walhalla, S.C.) guided the offense with a pair of two-hit games and a pair of two-RBI contests to finish the day going 4-for-7 with four RBIs, including driving in the go-ahead runs in the second game. Navy got a pair of quality starts from its starters Noah Song (Sr., Claremont, Calif.) and Jared Leins (So., Raleigh, N.C.). Song went six innings allowing four hits and just one run while striking out nine in the first game. Leins struck out six batters in 6-1/3 innings giving up two runs on six hits. In the backend of the bullpen, Trey Braithwaite (So., Winchester, Va.) threw the final inning in both contests to pick up two saves to move his season total to six, which ranks eight for most saves in a career and fifth for most saves in a single season.

"In game one, we got a good start from Noah [Song] and Trey [Braithwaite] came in and collected those three outs," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos mentioned about his closer. "Then in game two, it was first and second with nobody out in the top of the ninth with a one-run lead and Trey gets a double play and a punchout. It was just a really good job on the backend today.

"Zach [Biggers] had some big hits today" Kostacopoulos mentioned about the clutch hitting. "He had two big hits in the first game with two outs and he had a two-run double in the second game. He had the big clutch hits and we kind of lived on the edge today. We played good defense today and made good plays. Holy Cross had a lot of baserunners and we did a good job on the defensive side to get two wins today."

Navy 3, Holy Cross 1

After two-and-half scoreless frames, the Midshipmen finally broke the scoreless draw in the bottom of the third inning. Jacob Williamson (Jr., Sims, N.C.) started the inning with a double down the right-field line and after the next two batters were retired, Evan Lowery (Jr., Williamsburg, Va.) drove in the first run of the game with a single out to right field.

The two-out rally in the third inning continued after Michael Coritz (Jr., Clifton, Va.) reached on a walk and moved Lowery into scoring position. Biggers delivered his first two-out hit of the day with a single through the left side of the infield to plate Lowery and give Navy a 2-0 advantage.

In the ensuing half inning, a sacrifice fly from Riley Livingston cut the Holy Cross deficit to one run after the top of the fourth inning.

The Midshipmen tacked on an insurance run in the home half of the fifth inning. Joe Simourian (Fr., Andover, Mass.) bunted for a base hit to start the inning and then with two outs and Simourian on second base, Biggers notched his second two-out RBI with a single out to right field extending Navy's lead to 3-1 heading into the final two innings.

Braithwaite notched his first save of the day after throwing a perfect ninth inning to seal Navy's 3-1 victory in game one.

Song (6-0) gave up two hits in the first inning, but only allowed two hits in his final five innings to secure his fifth-straight win. The senior just missed his eighth-start with double-digit strikeouts after he finished with nine to boost his season total to 99.

Pat McGowan (0-8) went all six innings in the complete game but suffered the loss after giving up three runs on six hits and three walks.

Navy 4, Holy Cross 3

Navy fell behind early in the second half of the doubleheader after the Crusaders scored the first run of the game in the third inning. After the first two batters were retired in order, a single followed by a double deep down the line in left field gave Holy Cross its first lead of the day, 1-0, in the top of the third inning.

The Midshipmen responded right away with a run in the bottom of the third inning to square the game at one run apiece. Simourian scored for the second time on the day after reaching on an eight-pitch walk to start the inning. The freshman came around to score without the help of hit after moving up to second on a wild pitch, then to third on a flyout by Lowery. Coritz drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Simourian to come in from third base.

With the game tied at one, the Crusaders regained the lead in the fifth inning, where they used two hits to plate a run and snatch a 2-1 edge over Navy.

After going the first six innings with just four hits, the Midshipmen's offense found some life in the seventh inning to record three hits and score three runs to take its first lead of the second game. Right after Dalton Baker (Fr., Sebring, Fla.) left the bases full of Holy Cross base runners to end the top of the seventh inning, Matt Wolff (Fr., Fishers, Ind.) tripled down the right field line on the first pitch of the bottom of the inning to start Navy's rally. Simourian drove in Wolff four pitches later on a groundout and tied the game, 2-2.

After tying the game, Navy held onto the momentum with a single from Lowery and he moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Coritz reached on a throwing error from Chris Rinaldi at shortstop placing runners on the corners with one out. In the first pitch of his at-bat, Biggers turned on the ball and drove it over the head of David Kale in left field. With the ball reaching the wall, Lowery scored from third base and Coritz was able to come around to score from first base on the double from Biggers to give the Midshipmen a 4-2 lead.

Despite Navy taking the momentum in the seventh inning, Holy Cross did not go away quietly with a run in the eighth inning. The Crusaders did not register a hit in the inning put scored another run from a sacrifice fly to pull within a run in the eighth inning. The Crusaders had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Trent Topping (Fr., Temecula, Calif.) came in out of the bullpen and registered a three-pitch strikeout to get the Midshipmen out of the jam in the eighth inning with a 4-3 lead.

Braithwaite came in for the save for the second time on the day in a one-run ballgame in the ninth inning. Following a single and a walk to start the final stanza, Braithwaite worked out of the jam with a 3-6-1 double play to get two outs on the board for Navy. Still, with the tying run over at third base, Braithwaite shut the door on Holy Cross with a four-pitch strikeout to seal the 4-3 victory in the second game of the day to also complete the doubleheader sweep.

In the no-decision, Leins went 6-1/3 innings allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six batters. Saturday marked the fifth-straight outing where Leins notched at least six strikeouts. Baker (2-1) earned the win after throwing 2/3 innings of relief allowing a run on two walks.

Declan Cronin (2-4) was tagged with the loss after 6-1/3 innings in the start surrendering seven hits, four runs -- three earned -- and two walks.

Navy and Holy Cross conclude the weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Terwilliger Brothers Field and Max Bishop Stadium.
