HAMILTON, N.Y. — Senior co-captains
Greyson Torain (Glen Burnie, Md.) and
Ryan Wade (Coronado, Calif.) helped spark a 7-0 fourth-quarter run to lead the Navy men's lacrosse team (5-5, 3-3 Patriot League) to a 16-11 victory over Colgate (3-7, 1-4 Patriot League) Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mids, who were outscored 5-1 in the third quarter, buckled down to hold the Raiders without a goal over the final 18:46 of the contest.
Eighth-year head coach
Rick Sowell used a single word to best describe his team's ability to rally.
Character
"We got off to a great start and were up 8-3," said Sowell. "Then we simply didn't have the ball. They got possessions, won some faceoffs, we had a couple of failed clears and they got on a roll and started feeling it. It didn't look great down two late in the game. We were a man down on faceoff to start fourth quarter and
Ryan Kern came up huge with a big stop for us.
"Greyson took over in the fourth quarter. Once it turned, we got our faceoff game going and made some big defensive stops. I can't say enough of how proud I am of these guys and the way they battle back."
Navy looked impressive early on in the game as it jumped out to an 8-3 lead with 3:36 to play in the second quarter. However, Colgate ended the half on a 3-0 run that saw faceoff specialist Malcolm Feeney win four straight draws and the Raiders closed to within two (8-6) at the break.
Colgate came out of the locker room with the hot hand, scoring back-to-back goals, including a goal by rookie attackman Brian Minicus to knot the game for the first time at 8-8 with 10:35 to play in the third.
The Mids pulled back ahead when middie
Michael Foster (So / Manassas, Va.) found Wade open on the left wing for the goal.
The Raiders answered by scoring three in a row, including the go-ahead goal by senior attackman Sam Cleveland, to take their first lead of the game. Junior pole Parker Baddley scored what would be the final goal of the game for Colgate at the 3:46 mark in the third quarter with the Raiders leading 11-9.
Torain and Wade put the team on their shoulders as the Mids began to methodically peck away at Colgate's lead. Torain scored back-to-back goals to knot the game at 11 before Wade scored the go-ahead goal on what looked as though he had no angle from the left wing.
Torain made it 13-11 with 6:20 to play in the game when he circled back around on the left side of the box and used his speed to get the space he needed to tickle the twine for the fifth time in the game. Wade, meanwhile, scored his fourth goal of the game off a pass from
Jack Sweeney (Fr / Glenelg, Md.) on extra-man. It marked Wade's first collegiate extra-man goal.
Starting attackman
Nick Cole (Fr / Ashburn, Va.) scored the final two goals of the game to post his second career hat trick and seal the Mids' 16-11 victory.
Torain, who paced the team with a career-high tying seven points on a career-high tying five goals and two assists, catapulted himself into Navy's all-time top 20 scoring list. The Tewaaraton Award watch list midfielder stands 19th with 125 points. Additionally, he moved into 15th on the Mids' all-time goals scored list with 80.
Wade, known more for his play-making skills, finished with five points on a career-high tying four goals and an assist. He is now tied for 25th on the Mids' all-time scoring list with 108 points and stands ninth on the assists list with 70. He also extended his consecutive games with a point streak to 34 in a row, including 31 straight games with an assist.
Navy's defense was sensational over the final quarter, holding the Raiders off the scoreboard and forcing them into five turnovers. It marked the fourth time this season the Mids have held a team scoreless for a quarter. All-Patriot League goalkeeper
Ryan Kern (Jr / Middletown, Del.) helped orchestrate the defensive effort from between the pipes where he made 16 saves on the day, including three in the final quarter. The Mids' defense allowed just seven shots by the Raiders over the final 15 minutes, including three in the closing two minutes.
Navy and Colgate each won 15 draws in the game with rookie
Nick Barry (Islip, N.Y.) winning 13 of the 24 he took. Barry also came up with a career-high nine ground balls.
The Midshipmen return home next weekend where they will play host to archrival Army in what will be the 100th meeting between the two programs. CBS Sports Network will televise the game beginning at 3:30 pm or 45 minutes after the conclusion of the Army-Navy women's lacrosse game that starts at 1:00 pm. Pete Medhurst and
Joe Miller will have the call on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV.
