ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's rowing team had a stellar day of action in its first home meet on the Severn River since 2012. Hosting a four-race slate on Saturday morning, the Mids dominated a pair of Patriot League opponents in Georgetown and Lehigh on their way to a four-for-four showing. Navy won all for races by at least eight seconds.
"Today was an awesome day on the Severn," exclaimed head coach
Joe Schlosberg. "There was a great crowd, great weather and great racing!
"We adjusted our race plan a bit this week and it looked like all boats did well with those adjustments. I was really pleased with the poise we showed across the board in the first half of the race course. We were definitely able to take that into the second half of the race and we finished strong."
The first varsity eights from all three schools kicked off the competition at 9:00 a.m. Racing on a 2,000-meter piece of the Severn River and finishing along the Naval Academy's Hospital Point Seawall, Navy was in control throughout the majority of the event and defeated Georgetown by eight seconds at 6:34.4 to 6:42.4. Lehigh was third, 9.7 seconds behind the Hoyas at 6:52.1.
The second varsity eight crews were next on the water. Navy really flexed its muscle and depth in this race as the Mids' 2V8 cruised with a winning time of 6:48.8. Competing as a guest crew, Navy's 3V8 also raced alongside Lehigh's and Georgetown's second boats. The Mids' 3V8 placed second overall at 7:01.9 ahead of the Mountain Hawks' 2V8 at 7:04.8 and the Hoyas' 2V8 at 7:12.0.
The fours were next up on Saturday. Navy's dominance continued in the second half of the meet as its first varsity four crew won by 16.3 seconds over Lehigh, 7:35.5 to 7:51.8. Georgetown was off the pace at 8:00.5
In the second varsity four contest, it was one-on-one showdown between Navy and Georgetown. The Mids completed the four-race sweep of the day with a 10.6-second margin of victory, 7:42.5 to 7:53.1. Navy's fourth varsity eight crew also came down the Severn as a guest in this race and clocked in with a 7:12.2 result.
"We survived exams and a tough week of training and racing," remarked Schlosberg. "Now we have to set our sights on the Clemson Invite.
"Thanks to both Lehigh and Georgetown for coming out and racing today!"
Navy will take a week off from competition before getting on the water next at the Clemson Invitational on the weekend of April 19-20.
