Navy's Heavyweight & Lightweight Crew Programs to Race at Eastern Sprints

Each team to enter six boats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 11 Navy heavyweight and No. 8 lightweight crew programs will each be taking part in the 63rd Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Sprints on Sunday in Worcester, Mass. at Lake Quinsigamond. The event annually hosts some of the top rowing squads from across the country in a day-long competition. The heat racing begins at 8 a.m. before championship final action kicks off at 12:48 p.m. 12 different crews will be racing under the Navy Crew banner with six boats from each of the heavyweight and lightweight programs.

In heavyweight action, Navy's first, second and third varsity eight crews are seeded ninth overall. The Mids' two lower boats, the 4V8 and 5V8 are ranked sixth and second, respectively.

On the lightweight side of the spectrum, both Navy's first and second varsity eight boats are seeded seventh. The Mids' next three boats are all ranked in the top-three as their 3V8 is seeded second, their 4V8 third and 5V8 tied for first.

Scouting the Opposition
The heavyweight field at the 2019 EARC Sprints is 17 teams deep and consists of Boston U., Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, George Washington, Georgetown, Harvard, Holy Cross, Navy, Northeastern, Penn, Princeton, Rutgers, Syracuse, Wisconsin and Yale.

In the lightweight competition, nine programs will be racing in Worcester, as the field is as follows, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Harvard, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Yale.

Last Year at the Eastern Sprints
In the 2018 competition at Lake Quinsigamond, the heavyweight program entered six boats and saw five of those respective crews compete in grand or petite finals. As the conclusion of the day-long event, Navy finished 12th in the Rowe Cup team standings.

The Mids' fifth varsity eight squad led the results for Navy at the 2018 regatta with a third place finish in its respective race at 6:09.087. Navy's first varsity eight placed 13th overall as the Mids controlled the action in the third final and won the race outright. Navy's V8 clocked in with a time of 6:14.241, more than two seconds ahead of Columbia (6:16.683).

With six entrees in the 2018 championship, the Mids' lightweight program qualified for and competed in five different grand finals with four medal-worthy outcomes. The Mids' fifth varsity crew led the way as it finished atop its class and took home the gold in Worcester, Mass. As a program, Navy finished third overall in the Jope Cup team point standings.

Racing in the fifth/sixth varsity eight event, Navy's 5V crew won gold with a first place time of 6:05.792 to knock off Harvard (6:07.716). Navy's first varsity crew was part of a tightly-grouped quartet of boats that were battling for positions three through six. Penn took the final medal position with the third-best time at 6:13.414. Navy came in behind Harvard (6:14.854) to place fifth at 6:16.036. The Mids held off the Cornell Big Red (6:16.649).
