Naval Academy Announces Major Athletic Award Winners

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-- The United States Naval Academy announced its major athletic award winners Thursday afternoon at the annual Prizes and Awards Ceremony at Alumni Hall.

Noah Song (Claremont, Calif.) of the baseball team was awarded the NAAA Sword for Men, which is presented to that man of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men's athletics during his years of varsity competition.

In his four years at Navy, Song has rewritten the program's record book. He broke the career record for wins (32), strikeouts (428), innings pitched (334 1/3) and tied for the most shutouts in school history with nine. All four records were previously set in 1961 by Chuck Davis. Along with breaking nearly six-decade-old career records, Song broke the single-season record for strikeouts, which Davis set in 1960, with 161 this season. Song also moved into the top 15 for career ERA at 2.37, which is the lowest ERA at Navy in the last 30 years. He is also second in program history in career strikeouts per nine innings at 11.52.

During the 2019 season, the senior right-hander posted a 1.44 ERA in 94 innings of work. His ERA is sixth in the country. Song leads the country with 161 strikeouts and has a nation-leading 11 wins, along with the top strikeout per nine inning mark at 15.41. In 14 starts, he allowed the opposition to hit just .171 at the plate. Song also ranks second in the country in complete games (six), 10th in hits allowed per nine innings (5.27) and 13th in WHIP (0.91).

Song was selected as the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year and was a First-Team All-Patriot League selection for the second straight season. The senior hurler was selected the National Player of the Week on five different occasions in 2019 and seven times in his career.

Song is the second consecutive baseball player to win the award following Stephen Born last year.  Prior to Born winning the award, there hadn't been a baseball-only student-athlete win the NAAA Sword for Men since R.C. Needham in 1907 (quarterback / outfielder Craig Candeto won the award in 2004).

The other nominees for the NAAA Sword for Men were Nicholas Gil (wrestling) and Dean Rye (sprint football).

Lauren Barber (New Wilmington, Pa.) of the women's swimming team was awarded the Vice Admiral Lawrence Sword for Women, which is presented to that woman of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in women's athletics during her years of varsity competition.

Barber became the first women's swimmer in Navy and Patriot League history to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Championship this year with her eighth-place showing in the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke. Barber was making the third trip to NCAA Championship in her career.  That tied her with Thuy-Mi Dinh (2008-10) for the most appearances by a Navy and league swimmer at the Division I Championship.  Additionally, Barber's nine career events at the meet betters the previous record of five which was jointly held by Dinh and Tara Chapmon (2009-10).

Barber was dominant at the Patriot League Championships, leading the Mids to four-straight titles.  She became the first swimmer in league history to win all 12 of her career individual events, as well as all 16 of her career relay events.  The 28 gold medals surpassed the previous league record for the most combined victories by eight.

Barber was also a perfect 16-0 in events against Army, leading the Mids to four N-Stars.  The 16 wins and 11 individual wins are Army-Navy records.

Barber graduates as the Navy and Patriot League record holder in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. She was the 2016 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Patriot League Swimmer of the Year.

Barber is the first swimmer to win the sword since Laura Gorinski in 2013 and the eighth swimmer overall.

Other nominees for the award include Patricia Mattingly (volleyball) and Marie Valenti (lacrosse).

Senior Sheppard Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) of the sprint football team was awarded the Thompson Trophy Cup, which is presented to that midshipman, male or female, who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy.

Wilson was elected to by his peers to serve as the Captain of the Captains for the 2018-19 season and worked hand-in-hand with Company Officers and Battalion Commanders to improve relationships between varsity athletics and Bancroft Hall. Wilson gave numerous talks to key leaders within the Brigade about the new aptitude system and honor on behalf of the varsity student-athletes.

On the field, he was a four-year letterwinner and was the defensive team captain his senior year. The linebacker helped lead Navy to the 2018 CSFL Championship with a win over Army in the title game.

In the classroom, Wilson will graduate on Friday with a 3.96 GPA in operations research and ranks 26th in the Naval Academy's Overall Order of Merit and third in Military Order of Merit.

Wilson is the first sprint football player to win the award since Richard Mies in 1967. Mies was also a wrestler, making Wilson the first sprint football-only player to win the award in its 127 years of existence.

Other nominees for the Thompson included Sean Brennan (Track & Field), Bradley Buchter (Diving), Christian Hodge (Baseball), Kelly Larkin (Lacrosse), Patricia Mattingly (volleyball) and Jared Prince (wrestling).

Benjamin Stewart (Charlestown, R.I.) of the men's track & field team was awarded the men's Coaches' Calvert Award, which recognizes a graduating varsity letterwinner who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.

Stewart was the 2019 Patriot League Indoor champion in the heptathlon and outdoor champion in the decathlon, helping the Mids to a second-place finish indoors and the Patriot League Championship outdoors.  It was the second time that Stewart won the Patriot League outdoor decathlon, as he also won it in 2018.

Stewart was also named All-East in the outdoor pole vault for his performance at the IC4A Championships, as Navy won the IC4A in back-to-back years for the first time since winning it three-straight times from 1944-46.

The multi-event specialist is a six-time All-Patriot League performer, while also earning 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-District (First Team) honors. The senior will graduate with a 3.75 GPA in honors ocean engineering and ninth in Military Order of Merit. In addition, he has been selected to the Superintendent's List and the Commandant's List all eight semesters at the Naval Academy.

Stewart is the first track & field athlete to win the award since Ralph Lufkin in 2005 and just the fifth in the 47-year history of the award.

Patricia Mattingly (New Albany, Ind.) of the volleyball team was awarded the women's Coaches' Calvert Award, which recognizes a graduating varsity letterwinner who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.

Mattingly helped lead Navy to the program's first Patriot League Tournament title and trip to the NCAA Tournament this fall as the Mids compiled a 23-9 overall record and shared the Patriot League regular- season title with a 13-3 record.  Two of those three losses came to co-champion American, which Navy defeated in the championship match of the league tournament.

Individually, Mattingly set the Navy record with 3,849 career assists, a total that also ranks ninth in league history.  Additionally, she ranks fifth in school history with 1,104 career digs and second with 52 career double-doubles.  This year she ranked second in the league with 1,039 assists and third with an average of 9.03 assists per set.

Mattingly earned CoSIDA Second-Team Academic All-America honors this year after being named a Third-Team Academic All-American as a junior.

Mattingly is the third Navy volleyball player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American (Cheryl Dolyniuk, 1982; Rachel Dougherty, 2007) and is the first to earn the accolade multiple times in a career.  She also is one of two Patriot League volleyball players to garner the honor twice.

Mattingly was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for volleyball for the third time in as many years and was named the Patriot League Setter of the Year for a third time, as well as receiving first-team all-league accolades for a third time.

Mattingly will graduate on Friday with a 3.89 GPA while majoring in applied mathematics. She stands 26th among her class in Military Order of Merit.

She is the first women's volleyball player to win the award since Aimee Burns in 2008 and the seventh all-time.
