Heavyweight Crew to Conclude Regular Season with Four-Team Meet in NJ

Mids to race against Columbia, GW and Hobart College

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight crew team will wrap up its regular season on Sunday with a quartet of races on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. beginning at 12:00 p.m. The No. 11 Mids will go up against No. 14 Columbia, No. 20 George Washington and No. 22 Hobart College. The Stevenson Trophy will be on the line between Navy and Columbia in the first varsity eight contest at 12:40 p.m.

The entire schedule for Sunday starts at noon with the third varsity crews racing. 20 minutes later at 12:20 p.m., the Mids', Lions', Colonials' and Statesmen's second varsity boats will face off. At 12:40 p.m., the same four squads will duke it out in the first varsity contest. The outcome between Navy and Columbia will be of keen interest with the Stevenson Trophy up for grabs. The fourth varsity crews from Navy and George Washington close out the day of racing at 1:00 p.m.

Sunday marks Navy's final action before the program begins postseason racing. Following the meet at Mercer Lake, the Mids will compete at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass. on May 19.

What's at Stake
Stevenson Trophy
First presented in 1950 to winner of the first varsity race between Navy and Columbia and named in honor of Maxwell Stevenson, an early chairman of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association, the Mids hold a substantial, 26-6 lead in overall wins.

Last Year's Matchup
In the four-team contest last April 28 at Mercer Lake, Navy came away with the fourth varsity victory and regained possession of the Stevenson Cup with a win over Columbia in the 1V.

In the first varsity eight race, both Navy and George Washington clocked in at 5:45.7 though a photo finish review gave a three-inch advantage to the Colonials. The Stevenson Cup was on the line in that same race and went to the higher finisher amongst Navy and Columbia. The Lions finished 3.9 seconds behind the Mids at 5:49.6 so Navy took home the trophy to Annapolis for the 26th time in the series.
