ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Recent Navy graduates Navy Christian Correale (Harrisburg, Pa.), Zach Piedt (Fort Mill, S.C.), and Anne Richter (Hinsdale, Ill.) received Google Cloud Academic All-America accolades for at-large sports from the College Sports Information Directors of America on Friday afternoon.
Swimmer Piedt and lacrosse player Richter received first-team accolades and gymnast Correale was named to the second team.
To be eligible for the initial district ballot, student-athletes must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 through the end of the 2019 fall semester, be at a minimum a sophomore academically, and be a starter or key reserve on their respective team. Student-athletes must be voted Academic All-District in order to move on to the national voting.
The at-large sports program consists of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew, fencing, women's field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and men's wrestling.
An applied mathematics major with a 3.96 GPA, Correale is now a two-time Google Cloud Academic All-American after earning a spot on the at-large third team in 2018. The team captain, he was the ninth-best scorer on both the rings and parallel bars in the ECAC with averages of 13.26 and 13.1, respectively. At the 2019 ECAC Championship, he earned all-league honors with a 12.9-point result that ranked fourth overall. Correale's efforts during the recent season helped lead Navy to its fourth-straight NCAA Championship appearance. At the national meet, Navy earned its highest finish in program history as the Mids placed tenth overall.
Correale's work in the classroom earned him First Team All-America Scholar-Athlete distinction by the Collegiate Gymnastics Association three straight years. He ranked in the top-75 in Academic Order of Merit (61st), Military Order of Merit (26nd) and Overall Order of Merit (54th) for the Naval Academy's Class of 2019.
Piedt concluded his academic career with a 3.98 GPA as a computer science major after having posted a 4.00 GPA in each of his final seven semesters. He ranked 20th in the Class of 2019 on the Overall Order of Merit, which included him being ranked first on the Military Order of Merit and 43
rd on the Academic Order of Merit. A CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2018, he was tabbed as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his sport as both a junior and senior. In the pool, Piedt earned his second first-team all-league nod in as many years this season after placing second in the 100 fly and 100 free and third in the 50 free at this year's championship. He previously received second-team all-league honors as a freshman and sophomore and was part of Navy's Patriot League title-winning team in each of his four years.
Richter majored in mechanical engineering major and boasted a cumulative 4.00 GPA. She was a four-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and earned Superintendent's List and Commandant's List distinction in all eight of her semesters at the Academy. Earlier this year, Richter was named a Marshall Scholar, one of the most prestigious honors available to undergraduate students in the U.S. Richter also was one of 29 Mids in the class of 2019 selected to be Bowman scholars, which allowed her to conduct independent research with nuclear applications. She ranked in the top-25 in Academic Order of Merit (1st), Military Order of Merit (8th) and Overall Order of Merit (23rd) for the Naval Academy's Class of 2019. On the field, the senior has played in 21 games during the 2019 season, making 20 starts with 29 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers on defense.
