Special Recognition
• Senior safety Sean Williams (football) tied for second in the country in forced fumbles with five.

• Senior safety Sean Williams (football) won the Defender of the Nation Award presented by the Charlotte Touchdown Club

• Senior Francis Kim (Water Polo) was the recipient of this year's Smith-McCool Sword award. This award is presented to the first-class midshipman that has the highest order of merit from the Texas Gulf Coast area. This award is named after two of our fallen shipmates that perished during flight as astronauts – Mike Smith '67 (Challenger) and Willie McCool '83 (Columbia).

• In August, Nicole Aunapu Mann (Women's Soccer, USNA Class of '99) was selected by NASA for training with Boeing's Starliner, the first crew flight for that vehicle. The spacecraft is set for launch in mid-2019 from Cape Canaveral.

• Al Cantello, a 55-year member of the cross country and track & field coaching staffs announced his retirement from the United States Naval Academy in August. During his 50 years as the head coach (1968-2018) of the men's cross country program, the Mids competed in 12 NCAA Championships, won eight Patriot League titles and defeated Army in 37 Star matchups. Cantello also was on staff with the track & field program, including a stint from 1981 to 1988 as head coach. Altogether, he collected 49 N-Stars during his time in Annapolis, the most in school history.

• The volleyball team won the program's first Patriot League Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time on the Division I level (since 1992).

• Senior Senen Ubina and Junioir Michael Kacergis paired up to win the 2018 Intercollegiate National Squash Doubles Championship in Philadelphia. Herold and Ubina defeated Navy teammates Jamie Kjorlien and Jack Lentz, 3-2.

• Junior Bradley Buchter became the first Navy men's diver to earn All-America accolades of any kind since 1996, as well as the first Patriot League men's diver to garner the laurel, when he received Honorable Mention status by placing fifth in the consolation final in the one-meter event at the NCAA Championship.

• Senior Lauren Barber became the first Navy and Patriot League women's swimmer to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Championship when she placed eighth in the consolation final in the 200 breaststroke.

• In June, Nicole Aunapu Mann (Women's Soccer, USNA Class of '99) was honored as a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame Class of 2019. She's the first Naval Academy graduate inducted and just the eighth soccer player to join the hall since its creation in 1988.

• Carla Criste, a 27-year member of the women's track & field coaching staff, announced her retirement from the United States Naval Academy in August. In her nearly three decades at the helm of the Navy women's track and field program, Navy earned six Patriot League team titles (three indoor / three outdoor) with 120 individual Patriot League champions and 20 championship relay teams. The Midshipmen won Patriot League Indoor Championships in 2001, 2009, and 2011 and Outdoor Championships in 2003, 2012 and 2018 with Criste at the helm.

• Rifle qualified for the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2011.

• Senior Ian Burgoyne (Men's Lacrosse) served as Brigade Commander, the highest ranking midshipman, during the fall semester.

• Senior Greyson Torain (Men's Lacrosse) was selected in both the Premier Lacrosse League (Chaos LC) and Major League Lacrosse (Chesapeake Bayhawks) Drafts.

• Senior Ryan Wade (Men's Lacrosse) was selected to play in the 2019 USILA Senior All-Star Game.

• Senior Catalina Rico (Women's Tennis) selected as the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award winner in the Atlantic Region

• Senior Noah Song (Baseball) named a finalist for the Golden Spikes, Dick Howser Trophy and National Pitcher of the Year

• Senior Noah Song (Baseball) becomes highest drafted player in program history after being selected 137th overall (fourth round) by the Boston Red Sox

• Senior Noah Song (Baseball) sets program records in career wins (32), career strikeouts (428), career innings pitched (334-1/3), strikeouts in a single season (161), strikeouts per nine innings in a single season that also ranks tied for sixth all-time in NCAA Division I history (15.41) and is tied for most career shutouts with nine.

• Senior Noah Song (Baseball) became the first First Team All-American in program history

• Senior Christian Hodge (Baseball) tied the single-season record for most home runs with 12

• Senior Noah Song (Baseball) sets the Patriot League record of most Pitcher of the Week honors in a career with 10

• Senior Stefano Pineda (Men's Track and Field) was named a Draper Fellow, while also receiving the Lemelson Presidential Graduate Fellowship to continue his education at MIT. In addition, Pineda, a mechanical engineering major with a 4.00 cumulative GPA, was also named a LANL XCP Fellowship, a Trident Scholar, and a Bowman Scholar.

• Senior Anne Richter (Women's Lacrosse) was named a Marshall Scholar, one of the most prestigious honors available to undergraduate students in the US. This year, over 1,000 candidates competed for one of the 48 scholarships awarded. Richter, a mechanical engineering major with a 4.00 cumulative GPA, was one of 29 midshipmen in the class of 2019 selected to be Bowman scholars, and is currently conducting independent research with nuclear applications.

• In January, Lindsay (Rheiner) Carrick (Women's Lacrosse, USNA Class of '15) was chosen as the 2018 Marine Corps Semper Fit Female Athlete of the Year. She was recognized at the Commandant's Combined Awards Ceremony held at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The Marine Corps Athlete of the Year is awarded to one male and one female active duty Marine each year. The winners are chosen based on their athletic skills and how well they embody Marine Corps values.

• Margaret (Morton) Jackson (Women's Lacrosse, USNA Class of '10) was selected for two prestigious awards: a Boren fellowship to study in Japan and a Fulbright grant to do research in China. She chose the Fulbright which will sponsor her research into renewable energy development in affiliation with the Institute of Energy, Environment, and Economy at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Her work will focus on how China has evolved as a leader in renewable energy and how the Chinese government is increasing incentives for distributed renewable energy systems to meet its non-fossil fuel energy target under the Paris Agreement. Before her research period begins, Jackson will spend four months starting in July on language training as part of the Critical Language Enhancement Award.

• The Navy rowing program was selected to represented the United States at the 2019 Henley Royal Regatta in the King's Cup event. In the 100^th anniversary of the first King's Cup race, 18 Midshipmen and recent USNA graduates will compete in a mixed gender eight-person with a coxswain single-elimination bracketed event against seven other international teams of active duty military officers or undergrad military academy students. The United States Armed Forces team is made up of heavyweight, lightweight and women student-athletes and officers from Navy.

• Karen Boyle, the head coach of the Navy women's cross country team for 32 years from 1987 through 2019, announced her retirement in May. A four-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, Boyle earned that accolade following each of the Mids' four league titles in 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012. With her support, Boyle's student-athletes attained First-Team All-Patriot League honors 25 times from 2003 through 2018. Her teams at Navy went 21-11 versus Army during her tenure and finished in the top-three at the Patriot League Championship in 12 of 16 years.

• Megan Hanson from women's rowing graduated in May as the United States Naval Academy Class of 2019 Valedictorian.

• Senior Noah Song (Baseball) was awarded the NAAA Sword for Men, which is presented to that man of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in men's athletics during his years of varsity competition.

• Senior Lauren Barber (Women's Swimming) was awarded the Vice Admiral Lawrence Sword for Women, which is presented to that woman of the graduating class who is considered by the Association's Athletic Council to have personally excelled in women's athletics during her years of varsity competition.

• Senior Sheppard Wilson (Sprint Football) was awarded the Thompson Trophy Cup, which is presented to that midshipman, male or female, who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy.

• Senior Benjamin Stewart (Men's Track & Field) was awarded the men's Coaches' Calvert Award, which recognizes a graduating varsity letterwinner who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.

• Senior Patricia Mattingly (Women's Volleyball) was awarded the women's Coaches' Calvert Award, which recognizes a graduating varsity letterwinner who displayed leadership, consistent effort, loyalty and dedication to the sport and who has taken their abilities beyond the expectations of the coach, peers and themselves.
