Stevens Named Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball

Navy has now had a Freshman All-American in each of the last four seasons

TUCSON, Ariz. – Zach Stevens (Fr., Lexington, Mass.) represented the Navy baseball program on the 2019 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American list the publication released on Wednesday morning.

During his freshman campaign, Stevens led the Midshipmen with a .319 batting average and a .519 slugging percentage. In his first season of collegiate baseball, he appeared in 49 games and made 48 starts, while averaging more than a hit per game with 51 hits overall. Stevens notched 11 doubles, which was third on the team, and he was second with three triples while posting five home runs and 28 RBIs.

Stevens was selected to All-Patriot League Second Team at first base this season and he is one of eight first basemen named to the Freshman All-American list by Collegiate Baseball. Among the first basemen on the list, Stevens posted the best batting average and had the second-most doubles.

As a freshman, the native of Lexington, Mass., had 14 multi-hit games and was one of two Midshipmen to record a four-hit game after going 4-for-5 on the road against Lafayette on March 30. He also had 10 multi-RBI games with his nine two-RBI games leading the team. Stevens also had the longest hitting streak of the season for Navy, which spanned 12 games from April 17 to May 11.

The only other Patriot League Freshman All-American was Lafayette's Justin Johnson who was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year.

Leading the list of Freshman All-Americans is South Alabama's Ethan Wilson and North Carolina's Aaron Sabato as National Co-Freshmen Players of the Year, along with National Co-Freshmen Pitchers of the Year, Tyler Thornton of St. Mary's and JT Ginn of Mississippi State.

Stevens becomes the 12th player in program history to be selected as a Freshman All-American and this marks the fourth-straight season Navy has had a player earn the national recognition. Last season, Jared Leins was named a Freshman All-American. In 2017, Jacob Williamson and Zach Biggers earned the designation and Noah Song started the run of Freshman All-Americans in 2016.
