JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. – After three weeks of smaller regional-based events, the Navy women's cross country team traveled north to Boston for racing at the nationally-renown Battle In Beantown event on Friday. One of 22 teams entered in the 5k race, Navy placed first amongst Patriot League teams and 13
th overall.
Elizabeth Sullivan (Fr., Portsmouth, R.I.) continued her breakout freshman campaign as she was the first Mid to cross the finish line with a time of 18:23, that ranked her 47th in the field of 196.
Junior
Emily Craig (Reistertown, Md.) backed up her teammate in 61st place with a 18:36 effort. 22 spots back in 83rd,
Karla Mendoza (Sr., Madison, Neb.) was the third Mid to net the team points as she turned in a time of 18:53.
The fourth Mid to finish amongst the top-100 was
Claire Ostrowski (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) in 94th place. The senior completed the 5k race in a 19:05 time.
Caroline Ascherl (Sr., Granville, Iowa) was the fifth scorer for Navy as she finished 10 seconds back in 111th with a time of 19:15.
Syracuse won the team title with a dominant 48-point advantage over the host Boston College, 35 to 83. Wake Forest (106 pts), Harvard (138 pts) and Georgia Tech (141 pts) rounded out the top-five. Navy's 368-point total was good for 13th place, one position ahead of Army, who posted a team score of 407. In a potential preview of next month's Star Meet, both teams had five women finish in the top-100. The third Patriot League team at the race was Boston University, who recorded 441 points to place 16th.
Next up for Navy is action at the Paul Short Run on Saturday, Oct. 5. Racing at the 6k course on the campus of Lehigh University is set for 10:15 a.m.
