Hitting Struggles Cost Mids in Loss

RICHMOND, Va. –– Alabama (4-0) held an advantage over the Navy (2-2) volleyball team in hitting percentage in each of the three sets of a 25-21, 25-22, 25-13 victory by the Crimson Tide over the Mids Friday morning in Richmond, Va.

Alabama jumped out to a 7-1 lead at the start of the opening set.  Navy climbed nearly all of the way back when it sliced the deficit down to one point at 17-16.  The Crimson Tide were able to take a four-point lead at 21-17, only to see the Mids quickly winnow it in half at 22-20.  After the teams exchanged sideouts to make the score 23-21, Alabama recorded back-to-back kills to take the first set.

Alabama posted a .306 hitting percentage in winning the initial set and held Navy to a mark of .216.  Both teams would see their production decrease in the second set, with the Crimson Tide totaling a mark of .143 and limiting the Mids to a .094 percentage.  Despite that difference, the Mids very nearly came away with the victory in the second frame.  The score was tied nine times in the set and Navy held a slim 13-11 lead midway through the stanza.  Alabama would take a 17-15 lead, but the Mids kept it close until a 3-0 run gave the Crimson Tide a 22-18 lead.

Set number three was close at the start (9-8) until Alabama went on a 5-1 run to build a 14-9 cushion.

Alabama would end the 80-minute match with an overall hitting percentage of .225 and held Navy to a mark of .078.  Both teams accrued 102 attempts, but the Crimson Tide registered 38 kills and 15 errors to 28 kills and 20 errors for the Mids.

Amanda Montag (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) led the Navy offense with eight kills and also recorded the team's lone two aces.  Additionally for the Mids, Emily Solis (Sr., Leesburg, Va.) grabbed 15 digs and Avery Stowell (Yorba Linda, Calif.) totaled five blocks.

Navy will remain in Richmond overnight and face UC Santa Barbara Saturday at 11 a.m.
