HAMILTON, N.Y. – Racing in its second competition of the 2019 season, the Navy women's cross country team turned in a strong result at the Harry Lang Invitational on Saturday. Competing on a 4.8k course on the campus of Colgate University, freshman
Elizabeth Sullivan (Portsmouth, R.I.) spearheaded the Mids' effort as she crossed the finish line in third place, while the team placed third overall in a field of seven programs.
One week after running away with the individual crown at the Salisbury Fall Classic, Sullivan turned in her second straight standout performance as she came in third place in the field of 90 runners with a time of 17:24.4.
Junior
Emily Craig (Reisterstown, Md.) and senior
Karla Mendoza (Madison, Neb.) made it three Mids in the top-15 as Craig clocked in 12th at 17:55.7 ahead of Mendoza in 14th at 18:06.3.
Sullivan's freshmen classmates
Lauren Moore (Danbury, Conn.) and
Lael Flores (Harleysville, Pa.) rounded out Navy's scoring lineup as they finished back-to-back in 17th and 18th place with times of 18:08.3 and 18:11.3, respectively.
A close pack of Mids completed the course within four seconds of each other as
Caroline Ascherl (Sr., Granville, Iowa) placed 20th at 18:17.7, while
Julia Galbraith (Fr., Glen Allen, Va.) and
Annie Imhof (Jr., Great Mills, Md.) were 24th and 25th with respective efforts of 18:20.3 and 18:21.2.
In the team standings, Boston University captured the title with 26 team points. Syracuse and Navy were close together in second and third place as the Orange recorded 53 points, while the Mids finished with 64. The rest of the standings saw Bucknell in fourth (82 pts), Lehigh in fifth (122), Colgate in sixth (189) and Binghamton in seventh (204).
"We have been looking forward to previewing Colgate's course since they are hosting the Patriot League Championship in November," remarked head coach
Kim Lewnes. "Our freshmen class really shined on this 4,800-meter course with four of them finishing in our top-seven. Overall, we had a very productive weekend in upstate New York."
Navy will turn its attention to home action next weekend with the annual Navy Invitational on tap for Saturday morning at the USNA Cross Country Course. The race is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
