Women's Basketball Hits the Road for Saturday Tilt at Colgate

Mids swept the Raiders in 2018-19

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's basketball team will head out on the road for its second Patriot League contest of the 2019-20 season away from Alumni Hall. That contest on Saturday. Jan. 11 will be in Hamilton, N.Y. versus the Colgate Raiders. The matchup is shaping up to be battle of opposing strategies as the Raiders (10-4, 2-1 PL) lead the Patriot League in points per game (71.8), while the Mids (5-9, 0-3 PL) showcase one of the staunchest defenses in the Patriot League with a 58.3 points per game average. Tip-off between the two squads is set for 2 p.m. at Cotterell Court. The action will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network with free stats available via Colgate.

Last Time Out
Navy dropped a home Patriot League conference contest to Bucknell by a score of 61-34 on Wednesday night. Playing the reigning Patriot League champions, the Mids knew that they would be up for a stern test at Alumni Hall. On the strength of a 20-4 second quarter effort, the Bison rolled to the victory over the Midshipmen to stay undefeated in league play. Sophie Gatzounas and Mary Kate Ulasewicz led Navy's individual production on Wednesday as Gatzounas netted nine points, while Ulasewicz was one back with eight. Gatzounas also added a team-high five rebounds on the night.

The Mids opened the action on Wednesday night with seven early points over the first 3:03 of the quarter. Gatzounas put the exclamation point on this offensive streak with a three-pointer from the corner after Ulasewicz served her a quick one-touch pass from deep in the post. With the score 7-3 in favor of the Mids, the visiting Bison countered with an 8-0 run over the next 5:26 to go up 11-7. Ulasewicz ended that run with an athletic drive through the lane for a lay-up at 1:31. Bucknell netted the final four points of the period to take a 15-9 lead into the quarter break.
 
The Bison expanded that 4-0 streak out to a 17-0 run with 13 unanswered points and a 5-5 shooting start from the field during the first six-plus minutes of the second quarter. The combination of a Montana Braxton entry pass and a Ciera Hertelendy layup quelled the run and made it a 28-11 game at the 3:52 mark. Bucknell closed out its dominant second quarter with seven of the final nine points. Gatzounas recorded the Mids' basket to give her seven points for the first half. Overall, the Bison shot 7-10 from the field in the quarter.

Coming out of the locker room with the score 35-13, the Mids registered the first basket of the second half as Ulasewicz drove the baseline and flipped a layup towards the hoop for her fourth point of the contest at 8:48. Trailing 41-16, Navy's offense gained some traction with six points over a span 1:23 to cut its deficit to 43-22 by the 3:24 mark. Jasmine Bishop's second field goal of the quarter at 1:36 to make it a 48-24 contest. The final four points of the frame were scored by Bucknell. The Bison continued to control the contest throughout the fourth quarter as they held their lead between 24 and 28 points over the final 10 minutes. Both Ulasewicz and Nyah Garrison added four points for the Mids in the fourth quarter.
 
For the game, Bucknell outshot Navy, 52.3 percent (23-44) to 27.9 (12-43) from the field, 38.5 percent (5-13) to 18.2 (2-11) from three-point territory and 90.9 percent (10-11) to 40.0 (8-20) from the foul line.

Navy versus Colgate

The Navy women's basketball program received a well-rounded team effort on Saturday afternoon as the Mids defeated the Colgate Raiders at home by a score of 67-52. Buoyed offensively by four players with double-digit point scoring performances and forcing the Raiders into 24 turnovers, the Mids completed the season sweep of Colgate with a 15-point victory. Jennifer Coleman filled the statsheet on Saturday as the freshman point guard recorded game-highs in points with 16, rebounds with 11, assists with five and steals with five. On the offensive end, Morgan TaylorBianca Roach and Sophie Gatzounas all aided Navy's scoring attack with respective totals of 12, 11 and 10 points.

The action on Feb. 9 started slowly as the teams combined for 10 points over the opening five minutes, six for Colgate and four for Navy. The visiting Raiders slowly expanded their lead out to four points before Gatzounas made her second basket of the game to tighten it to 13-11 at 2:05. The back-and-forth play continued down the stretch as a Cayla Hannibal three-pointer and a pair of Roach free throws helped Navy pull ahead 16-15 before the quarter expired.
 
Another three-pointer by Hannibal, this time 72 seconds into the second quarter, pushed the Mids up 21-17. The addition of two successful free throws and a layup by Taylor on back-to-back possessions increased Navy's run to 9-0 and made it a 25-17 game at 7:42. After reaching that eight-point lead, Navy went cold for the next 2:47 and Colgate was able to shave five points off its deficit. The three-ball came up key for the Mids once again as Coleman found the bottom of the net from distance at 4:55. Less than 90 seconds later, Coleman swished her second trey to make it 31-24. The freshman's hot streak continued with a layup next time down the court. During this stretch of play from 4:55 to 3:01, Coleman was three-for-three with eight points. Up 33-24 after Coleman's layup, Navy extended its lead to 12 points by halftime, 38-26. In the second quarter, the Mids shot 66.7 percent from the field on eight-of-12 shooting. 

Navy immediately stretched its lead out to 16 points as Laurel Jaunich and Coleman went back-to-back with field goals to start the second half. With the score 42-26, Colgate hits its stride offensively with eight unanswered points from 8:33 to 5:59. Gatzounas short-circuited the Raiders' run at 5:29 with a drive and layup to make it 44-34. In the second half of the period, Navy outscored Colgate, 8-6 to take a 52-40 lead into the third quarter break.
 
The Raiders made a concerted effort in the early portion of the fourth quarter to come back and were able to cut three points off their 12-point disadvantage with an 8-5 start to the period to make it 57-48 by 5:36. The Mids didn't let the visitors get too comfortable in single-digits as they extended their lead out to as many as 16 points, 67-51, by the 2:57 mark. The game closed at a 67-52 score as Colgate went without a made field goal for the final 5:36 of the contest.
 
For the game, Navy outshot Colgate 45.6 percent (26-57) to 40.4 (21-52) from the field and 68.8 percent (11-16) to 50.0 (7-14) from the foul line. Both squads shot 20.0 percent from three-point range as the Mids were 4-20, while the Raiders were 3-15.
