ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's tennis (0-0) begins its 2020 spring season with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Midshipmen host Saint Francis (0-0) at 9 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. match against St. Bonaventure (0-0). Both matches are slated to take place at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.
Navy begins its dual season after posting its eighth 20-win campaign over a nine-year stretch in 2019. The Midshipmen finished the year with a 23-9 record overall and went 5-1 during their Patriot League regular-season matches. In the postseason, Navy advanced to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament.
During the fall portion of this season, Navy compiled an overall record of 87-69 in singles matches and 46-27 in doubles as the Midshipmen competed in six events. Heading into 2020,
Jillian Taggart and
Kacey Moore are Navy's only individuals with double-digit singles victories. Taggart boasts a team-high 12 wins after going 12-4 in the fall, while Moore finished 2019 with a 10-7 mark. In doubles competition,
Katreina Corpuz has gone 10-4 overall to start the year, which includes a 9-2 record when partnered with
Meghana Komarraju.
Freshman
Samantha Choi became the first individual in program history to earn a national ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Following the fall season, Choi was ranked 114th overall in the nation in singles. In three fall tournaments, Choi compiled a singles mark of 9-0, which included winning her first eight matches in straight sets. Choi also put together a record of 5-3 in doubles contests with her partner
Tina Li.
Saint Francis will be Navy's second opponent to start its 2020 season as the Red Flash take on Towson on Friday before traveling to Annapolis. Last season, Saint Francis compiled a record of 3-17 overall and finished 2-2 in the NEC. During their conference schedule, the Red Flash beat St. Francis Brooklyn (6-1) and Mount St. Mary's (5-2). Saint Francis' lone non-conference victory came against Morgan State on the road in a narrow 4-3 contest. In the fall, Stephanie Miller paced the Red Flash with an 11-8 record in doubles matches while going 13-7 over 20 singles affairs, which was highlighted by a 9-1 mark over her final 10 contests leading up to the spring season.
Navy and Saint Francis faced off against one another in Annapolis to start the Midshipmen's home slate in the spring of 2019, where Navy picked up a 6-1 win in its home opener.
St. Bonaventure is also in action on Friday before making its way to Annapolis on Saturday as the Bonnies take on Loyola in Baltimore to start their spring season. In 2019, St. Bonaventure finished 8-15 overall and finished out the postseason in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship following a 4-0 loss against Duquesne. The Bonnies competed in four events this fall, which included an appearance in the Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational in Annapolis. St. Bonaventure racked up 14 singles wins and a trio of doubles wins during the Moore Invitational in September. Emily Stanley has a team-best nine singles wins for the Bonnies and Penelope Abreu has five doubles wins to pace the team.
In the dual between the Midshipmen and Bonnies last spring, Navy grabbed a 6-1 victory at home after sweeping doubles and winning five singles matches in straight sets.
