Women’s Tennis Posts Two 7-0 Wins to Start Spring Season

Navy did not drop a set en route to 11 singles wins and five doubles victories

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (2-0) picked up two 7-0 victories on Saturday against Saint Francis (0-2) and St. Bonaventure (1-1). Over the two matches, the Midshipmen did not drop a set through 11 singles matches and five doubles contests.

Throughout the doubleheader, Navy had 11 different players grab their first singles dual win of the season and 10 players posted their first doubles win of the spring.

"The coaching staff felt good about both matches today," head coach Keith Puryear said. "While we are still fine tuning, it was a great start to the spring season. We are looking now towards a great week of practice to prepare for next weekend's competitions."

Needing just one doubles win to capture the doubles point after the Red Flash defaulted at No. 3 doubles, the pair of Brooke Bogdanovich (Jr., Suwanee, Ga.) and Irene Norman (Fr., Aurora, Ohio) secured the 1-0 lead for Navy after winning at second-seeded doubles, 6-0. With the doubles points in hand, Danika Kahatapitiya (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kacey Moore (So., Wellington, Fla.) earned a 6-1 decision at No. 1 doubles to complete the doubles sweep.

Shifting into the singles competition, Navy took a 2-0 lead in the match with Saint Francis defaulting at No. 6. Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Anouk Ma-Ajong at No. 3 singles and the clinching point for the Midshipmen came at No. 5 singles with Bogdanovich capturing a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Camryn Rossa.

At No. 4 singles, Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C.) swept Romina Cutipa (6-1, 6-0) to push Navy's advantage to five points. At the top-two seeded singles matches, Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) defeated Lucia Seigford, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and then Moore won the final four games of the second set at No. 1 singles to come from behind in the set to complete the 7-0 win for the Midshipmen. After winning the first set 6-0 over Laura Gutierrez, Moore fell behind 4-3 in the second set but rallied to win 7-5 for her 11th win of the year.

Navy's momentum from the first match of the day carried over into the second contest as the Midshipmen swept the doubles matches to win the doubles point and take the early lead. The pair of Corpuz and Komarraju started the match with a 6-0 win at top-seeded doubles and then Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) and Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.) followed suit with a 6-0 win of their own at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. In the final doubles match, Cyr and Kaylah Hodge (Sr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) collected a 6-3 win as Navy took a 1-0 lead into singles.

Following their clinching doubles match, Klopfer and Dervishian finished back-to-back to start singles competition to put Navy on the brink of victory. Klopfer won at No. 4 singles against Emily Stanley and Dervishian beat Kahlei Reisinger at No. 5, both by the scores of 6-1, 6-0. Samantha Choi (Warrenville, Ill.) clinched the match for Navy in her dual debut with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Andrea Roque.

Tina Li (Jr., Wexford, Pa.) gave Navy a 5-0 advantage following a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles against Buse Gunay and then Jillian Taggart (Fr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) won her first career dual match in straight sets at No. 2 singles against Ameila Haley (6-3, 6-3). The final match on the court featured Hodge winning at No. 1 singles over Penelope Abreu, 6-4, 6-3. Hodge's win secured the Midshipmen's second 7-0 win of the day.

Following five 7-0 victories during the 2019 spring season, Navy is nearly halfway to that mark just one day into the season.

The Midshipmen are back in action next Sunday for a home doubleheader against Villanova and Richmond. Navy takes on the Wildcats at 9 a.m. and then faces the Spiders at 1 p.m. at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
