Navy Continues Home Slate with Two Matches on Sunday

Navy hosts Villanova (9 a.m.) and Richmond (1 p.m.) on Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy women's tennis (2-0) continues its 11-match homestand to start the season as the Midshipmen host Villanova (0-0) and Richmond (1-2) on Sunday. Navy takes on Villanova at 9 a.m. and then faces Richmond at 1 p.m. at the Tose Family Tennis Center.

The Midshipmen started their 2020 campaign with a pair of 7-0 victories over Saint Francis and St. Bonaventure last weekend. Over the two matches, Navy had 11 different individuals compete in each of the singles matches along with five different doubles pairs. Throughout the opening weekend, the Midshipmen did not drop a set over their first two contests of the year.

Following the opening weekend, Katreina Corpuz was selected as a Patriot League Honorable Mention Player of the Week following a singles win and a doubles victory. Corpuz captured a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against Saint Francis and then won a 6-0 decision at No. 1 doubles against St. Bonaventure with her partner Meghana Komarraju

Heading into the weekend, freshman Jillian Taggart leads Navy with a 13-4 record and captured her first dual win of the season after a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles against St. Bonaventure. The Midshipmen also feature Kacey Moore and Samantha Choi with double-figure wins. Moore sits at 11-7 this season and Choi -- who is ranked 114th in the nation in singles -- has gone 10-0 to start her career. Corpuz has a team-high 11 doubles victories, which includes a 10-2 mark when paired with Komarraju. The pair of Kaylah Hodge and Amanda Cyr have also paired up for double-digit wins as they are 10-4 as a team.

Villanova begins its 2020 spring slate this coming weekend and will take on George Mason on Saturday before making the trip to Annapolis on Sunday. Last season, the Wildcats were an even .500 overall after going 11-11. Villanova went 3-4 in the Big East and as the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament, the Wildcats upset third-seeded Marquette, 4-3, before falling to No. 2-seeded DePaul, 4-2.

During the 2019 meeting between Navy and Villanova, the Midshipmen grabbed a 6-1 decision at home to start the month of February. Navy won the top-two seeded doubles matches without dropping a game and won three singles matches in straight sets en route to the victory.

Richmond opened up its 2020 slate with a 4-3 loss at Penn and a 5-1 loss to Syracuse. Lea Owens was part of two victories for the Spiders against Syracuse with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles and partnered with Dessi Zlateva to win 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Owens also won twice at Penn, which included helping Richmond win the doubles point after the Spiders won two of the three doubles contests. Andrea Campodonico leads the Spiders with an 8-2 singles mark with Owens just behind at 7-1.

Last year, Richmond upended Navy at home in a 5-2 contest. The Spiders won the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. In singles, Annalise Klopfer and Corpuz earned straight-set wins for Navy's two points in the matchup.
