ANNAPOLIS, Md. ––
Evan Wieck (Sr., Amarillo, Texas) joined elite company in Navy men's basketball history with a perfect shooting night during an 81-66 victory by the Mids (12-8, 6-3 Patriot League) over Holy Cross (3-19, 2-7), Wednesday night at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.
Wieck did not miss a shot in the game as he was 10-10 from the field and 4-4 from the foul line in scoring a career-best 24 points.
David Robinson, who was 12-12 from the field against East Carolina (March 7, 1985), and Kevin Sinnett, who was 10-10 from the floor against Saint Francis U. (Jan. 14, 1978), are the only other Mids to make at least 10 field goal attempts without a miss in a game.
Additionally, Wieck and Sinnett are the only Mids to be perfect from the foul line while going at least 10-10 from the floor. Sinnett was 8-8 from the charity stripe in the aforementioned contest.
The Patriot League record for the most field goals made without a miss is 11.
"I said something in there (the locker room)," said Navy head coach
Ed DeChellis. "'Wieckster, if they would have picked one guy on the team to not miss a shot, I'm not sure I would have picked you.' He laughed and said, 'coach, I'm not sure I would have picked myself.'
"He had a great night. We were going to go into him. We thought he had an opportunity to score. He finished around the basket. I always say to the guys, 'you have to make one-foot shots and you have to make free throws and you can win games.' And he said to me, 'coach, I made all of my one-foot shots and my free throws.'"
"I feel my strength is back completely (from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss three league games); I'm still down some weight but I am going to be getting it back this week," said Wieck.
The early portion of the game saw the score tied four times and the lead change hands on six occasions. Navy used an 11-2 run to take a 20-13 lead only to see the Crusaders draw to within two points at both 20-18 and 22-20. It was a three-point game at both 24-21 and 26-23 before the Mids closed the half on an 11-0 run.
Cam Davis (Jr., Battlefield, Mo.) hit a jumper, then
Luke Loehr (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) grabbed a defensive rebound on one end of the floor before making a three-point shot on the other. A Holy Cross offensive foul gave the ball back to Navy, which led to a layup by Wieck that pushed the margin out to 33-23. Wieck would score again nearly two minutes later, then
Dave Kasanganay (So., Charlotte, N.C.) snared a defensive rebound and raced to the other end of the court to sink an off-balance shot just before the horn sounded to end the first half. His basket made the score 37-23 at the break.
Navy shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the field in the first half and limited Holy Cross to a mark of 42.1 percent (8-19). The Mids also held a 15-9 edge on the glass and a 12-4 advantage in points scored off of turnovers.
John Carter Jr. (So., Spring Hill, Tenn.) made three-point field goals on three of Navy's first five possessions of the second half to stretch the lead out to 46-27. The cushion dwindled to 11 points midway through the second stanza before a 9-0 run by the Mids expanded their advantage to a game-high 20 points at 62-42 with 8:36 remaining.
"We talked about the Army game Monday and I thought we flushed it," said DeChellis, "but obviously we didn't because then we had two horrible practices. Give our guys credit; they took the constructive criticism and watched all of the clips and they went out there tonight and I thought they played pretty well. I was proud of their efforts on both ends of the floor."
Each team shot over 50 percent from the field in the second half as Navy was 15-28 (53.6%) and Holy Cross was 12-22 (54.5%). Those marks gave the Mids an overall shooting night of 56.1 percent and the Crusaders a total of 48.8 percent.
The Crusaders were an impressive 16-18 (88.9%) from the foul line in the second half and ended the game shooting 20-24 (83.3%) from the charity stripe. The Mids did not attempt a foul shot in the first half and were 9-10 (90%) from the line over the last 20 minutes of the game.
In addition to Wieck's shooting performance, Davis totaled 15 points and five assists, Carter posted 14 points and five assists and Kasanganay set career highs for points (9), steals (4) and minutes played (19).
"It was a great team win," said Wieck. "The difference in the game was our bench play (18 points)."
"I thought Cam had a really good night and John was solid; it was nice to see him finally get out and make some threes," said DeChellis. "He did some good things, and our guy David off the bench … I thought we needed jump starting and Dave's played well in practice and some other guys have as well.
"He's (Kasanganay) active in practice. Sometimes as a coach you just have a gut saying this is what you need to do tonight. Tonight, it was I thought this kid deserved to get in there and get a shot. We needed something different."
Navy heads to Baltimore for a Saturday evening (5 p.m.) game at Loyola.
