Men’s Soccer Opens Season with 2-1 Road Win over North Carolina State

David Jackson and Matt Nocita scored just 2:01 apart to secure Navy's win

RALEIGH, N.C. – After North Carolina State (0-4-0) scored the first goal of the night, Navy (1-0-0) answered with its two goals just 2:01 apart in the first half with Matt Nocita (Jr., Porter Ranch, Calif.) tallying the game-tying score and David Jackson's (Fr., Cypress, Texas) first collegiate goal was the game-winning goal in the Midshipmen's 2-1 road win over the Wolfpack.

Along with notching the game-winner, Jackson recorded the assist on Nocita's goal to finish with three points on the night for Navy in his collegiate debut. The Midshipmen's defense limited North Carolina State to eight shots for the match with just three on goal, while Navy finished with nine shots on the night and four shots on goal.

"I am really proud of our guys," head coach Tim O'Donohue commented after the match. "We played well and handled North Carolina State's athleticism. They are a very good team and I am very proud of our team's performance tonight."

North Carolina State controlled the pace of play over the first five minutes of the match and in the sixth minute Ivy Brisma tried to curl a shot into the net from the top-right corner of the penalty area but his shot just sailed over a leaping Ian Bramblett (Sr., Easley, S.C.) and the crossbar.

Just after the Wolfpack's bid for a goal, the Midshipmen started to control possession of the ball and Jacob Williams (Jr., Millersville, Md.) ripped a left-footed shot from 25 yards out that was pulled just wide of the right post in the seventh minute. Navy's offense continued to hold possession and press the issue in its attacking third. JD Wagner (So., Medford Lakes, N.J.) found space on the right wing to play the ball into the 18-yard box where Nicko West's (Sr., Mansfield, Texas) volley was tipped over the crossbar by North Carolina State's Leon Krapf.

Despite starting to control the game, Navy conceded the first goal of the match after Brisma was taken down on the end line inside the penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, Kuda Muskwe beat a diving Bramblett to the right post to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.

However, Navy battled right back and tied the game in the 37th minute after Jackson's cross off of a corner kick found Nocita at the far post and he rose above the North Carolina State defense to head home the game-tying goal.

The Midshipmen used their momentum from Nocita's goal to grab the lead just two minutes later. After Williams was taken down right after entering the 18-yard box, Jackson took the penalty kick for Navy and his shot was stopped by Krapf but Jackson pounced on the rebound and scored the go-ahead for the Midshipmen, which went on to be the game-winning tally.

Just before the end of the first half, Muskwe tried to tie the game after a long pass slipped by Bramblett but Muskwe's shot at an open frame hit the left post and Navy held a 2-1 lead at the intermission.

In the second stanza, both teams tried to add to their score lines in the early portion of the half but shots were scarce throughout the period as the Midshipmen generated just one shot and the Wolfpack had two in the final 45 minutes. Navy's best scoring chance in the second half came in the 73rd minute. After Baba Kallie (Fr., Coatesville, Pa.) was fouled just a yard outside the penalty area, Toni Adewole (Sr., Clarksburg, Md.) took the free kick and his shot went just over the crossbar.

With North Carolina State trying to press on the offensive end looking for the equalizer, the Midshipmen's defense only allowed one shot, which was off target, over the final 25 minutes of the contest to seal the 2-1 victory. Bramblett finished with two saves on the night to pick up the win in goal for the Midshipmen.

Sunday's night match marked the eighth time over the last two seasons that Navy has held its opponents to fewer than 10 shots in a match and the ninth time over that span that the Midshipmen have outshot the opposition.

This is Navy's second road win against an ACC foe since 1984 and first since 2013 when the Midshipmen won on the road against Virginia Tech.
