Setting the Stage
•    Navy and Temple meet on the gridiron for the 15th time and for the fourth time as American Athletic Conference foes when they square off on CBS Sports Network Saturday (6:00 pm) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. The game is presented by Navy Mutual. Due to Anne Arundel County and Maryland state rules, there will be no fans at Saturday's game.
•    Temple leads the all-time series against Navy, 8-6, including a 3-0 record against the Mids since Navy joined the AAC. Navy last beat Temple (31-24) in 2014 and last beat Temple in Annapolis (33-27, OT) in 2008 in what was dubbed the miracle at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy came from 20 points down in the final 10 minutes to tie the game on a 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Clint Sovie with 37 seconds left in regulation. The Mids went on to win in overtime on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Ricky Dobbs.
•    Since 2015, when Navy joined the American Athletic Conference, Temple has compiled a 30-10 conference record, which is the best in the AAC. Meanwhile, Navy's 28-13 conference record is the third best during that same timeframe.
•    Saturday's game will be the season opener for Temple. It's Navy's third opponent in its four games this season that the opponent has had the entire offseason to prepare for the Mids.
•    Navy is off to a 1-2 start for the first time since 2012. That team, which began the year 1-3, bounced back to go 7-2 the rest of the way and finish 8-5. Navy also started 1-2 during the triple option era in 2009 (finished 10-4), 2008 (8-5), 2007 (8-5), 2005 (8-4) and 2002 (2-10).
•    Navy has started three different quarterbacks in the first three games of the season for the first time since 1992 - Jim Kubiak (Virginia), Brian Ellis (Boston College), Jason Van Matre (Rutgers). That 1992 team finished 1-10.
•    A win over Temple on Saturday would mark the 100th-career victory by Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo and would make him just the 24th active coach with 100 career wins and just the sixth active coach to achieve it at one school. Please see page 15 of the notes for charts on where Niumatalolo stands nationally in wins among current coaches.

Navy vs. Temple - Last Meeting
Oct. 13, 2018 // Annapolis, Md. // NMC Memorial Stadium
•    (AP)  Anthony Russo threw for 300 yards including a 62-yard touchdown pass to Ventell Bryant midway through the fourth quarter and Temple won for the fourth time in five games by running past Navy, 24-17.
•    Owls fullback Rob Ritrovato tied the game at 17 on a 1-yard plunge within 5:53 left in the third quarter. From there, the defense for Temple contained Navy's triple-option attack.
•    Bryant, who had eight receptions for 147 yards, has caught a pass in 42 straight games, which is tied for the longest active streak in the FBS.
•    Senior Garret Lewis got his second career start at quarterback for Navy ahead of Malcolm Perry, who moved back to slot back. Lewis completed 3 of 11 pass attempts for 14 yards. He also ran for 56 yards with a 1-yard touchdown that gave the Midshipmen a 10-7 lead at the half.
•    Perry also had a go-ahead 30-yard touchdown run called back because of an illegal block on Ford Higgins.
•    Sophomore fullback Nelson Smith had 18 carries for a career-high 108 yards for Navy, which has lost three straight games. He had a career-long 45-yard run that set up his first career touchdown run from 12 yards out on the opening drive of the third quarter that gave Navy a 17-7 lead.
•    Last year, Temple held Navy to 136 rushing yards in a 34-26 victory. This time, the Midshipmen responded with a huge day on the ground, running for 270 yards.
•    Temple running back Ryquell Armstead was out of the lineup with an ankle injury. Backup Tyliek Raynor scored his first career touchdown on a 15-yard run with that gave the Owls a 7-3 lead with 11:31 left in the half.

This Date In Navy Football History
•    Navy is 10-9 all-time in games played on Oct. 10.
•    Some of the more memorable wins on this date include a 63-14 win over Rice in 2009, a 48-45 double overtime win over Pitt in 2007 and a 30-13 win over Air Force in 1981.

Three Starting Quarterbacks
•    Navy has started three different quarterbacks in its three games this season: Dalen Morris (BYU), Xavier Arline (Tulane) and Tyger Goslin (Air Force).
•    It is the first time Navy has started three different quarterbacks in the first three games of the year since 1992 when Navy started Jim Kubiak (lost for the year in the season opener vs. Virginia), Brian Ellis (lost for the year in the second game at Boston College) and Jason Van Matre (Rutgers).
•    The 1992 team was shut out in its first three games of the year and didn't score a point until the fourth quarter of the fourth game at North Carolina. The Mids finished 1-10 that year with the only win coming against Tulane (20-17).
•    Navy is the only team in the FBS to have started three different quarterbacks in the first three games of the 2020 season.

Navy to Wear Sticker in Honor of the 175th Anniversary of the Naval Academy
•    Through the efforts of the Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Naval School was established without Congressional funding, at a 10-acre Army post named Fort Severn in Annapolis, Maryland, on October 10, 1845, with a class of 50 midshipmen and seven professors. The curriculum included mathematics and navigation, gunnery and steam, chemistry, English, natural philosophy, and French.
•     In 1850 the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requiring midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. That format is the basis of a far more advanced and sophisticated curriculum at the Naval Academy today. As the U.S. Navy grew over the years, the Academy expanded. The campus of 10 acres increased to 338. The original student body of 50 midshipmen grew to a brigade size of 4,000. Modern granite buildings replaced the old wooden structures of Fort Severn.
•     Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in 1933. The Academy later replaced a fixed curriculum taken by all midshipmen with the present core curriculum plus 18 major fields of study, a wide variety of elective courses and advanced study and research opportunities.
•     Since then, the development of the United States Naval Academy has reflected the history of the country. As America has changed culturally and technologically so has the Naval Academy. In just a few decades, the Navy moved from a fleet of sail and steam-powered ships to a high-tech fleet with nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships and supersonic aircraft. The academy has changed, too, giving midshipmen state-of- the-art academic and professional training they need to be effective naval officers in their future careers.
•     The Naval Academy first accepted women as midshipmen in 1976, when Congress authorized the admission of women to all of the service academies. Women comprise over 20 percent of freshmen.
