Navy Drops Season Opener Against Georgetown

Zach Stevens recorded a pair of solo home runs for Navy

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – Georgetown (1-0) used the long ball to upend Navy (0-1) in the first game of a three-game series as the Hoyas belted a trio of three-run home runs en route to a 16-6 victory over the Midshipmen at Finch Field.

Zach Stevens (So., Lexington, Mass.) paced the Navy offense on Friday with a 2-for-5 day at the plate and a pair of solo home runs. On the mound, the Midshipmen gave up nine walks and hit four batters.

"Overall, I thought our bats were pretty good today but the home run ball hurt us today in giving up nine runs off home runs with three, three-run home runs," head coach Paul Kostacopoulos said. "We did not challenge the strike zone, we walked nine guys and that gives too many opportunities for the opposing offense to score."

Navy threatened early in the first inning with back-to-back singles from Zach Biggers (Sr., Walhalla, S.C.) and Michael Coritz (Sr., Clifton, Va.), but the senior pair was stranded on second and third base. The Hoyas loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and after a groundout scored the first run of the game, Freddy Achecar III hit the first of three, three-run home runs for the Hoyas.

The Midshipmen got on the board in the third inning with Stevens' first of two solo home runs on Friday afternoon but in the bottom half of the frame, Georgetown answered with a three-run home run from AJ Lotsis.

Trailing 7-1, Navy started to cut into its deficit with two runs in the fourth inning without recording a hit. Matt Wolff (So., Fishers, Ind.) scored on a groundout from Joe Simourian (So., Andover, Mass.) and then Jacob Williamson (Sr., Sims, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch. Stevens pulled the Midshipmen within three runs with his second long ball of the day as Navy trailed 7-4 heading into the sixth inning.

Navy kept Georgetown off the board in the fourth and fifth innings and then the Midshipmen threatened once again and loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs in the frame, Coritz sent a froze rope out to left field but his line shot was hit right at Lotsis and Navy was left the bases loaded.

After escaping from a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth inning, Georgetown broke the game with seven runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan M. Davis had the big hit of the inning with a three-run home run, which was the third of the day for the Hoyas.

The Midshipmen got two runs back in the seventh with a two-RBI single from Wolff to score Christian Policelli (So., Walkersville, Md.) and Evan Lowery (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.). The offense for Georgetown did not allow Navy to get back into the game with another run in the bottom of the inning and then Hoyas added a run in the eighth inning to seal a 16-6 victory over Navy on Opening Day.

Jared Leins (Jr., Raleigh, N.C.) suffered the loss to move to 0-1 on year. Leins allowed seven runs on five hits in 4-2/3 innings of work while striking out seven batters.

Carter Bosch (1-0) picked up the win after throwing 4-2/3 innings for Georgetown allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits.

Game two of the three-game series is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Finch Field.
